Of those names, I think I like Brennan. Winning at SJSU not easy and it’s been a steady build, can give him a pretty solid pay bump. He knows Corvallis (along with 3-4 of his current assistants).

Big no on Mendenhall. How many times does his name have to pop up here. He reportedly didn’t like OSU when he was here.

I don't think Bronco Mendenhall is a great fit and I don't think his allegiance was ever really to Oregon State anyway.
Harsin is interesting but kind of hit a wall as a coach at Auburn. He did get a big payday and if he wants to get back to coaching, maybe OSU can get him for a reasonable price.
I pooh poohed Brennan because I wasn't sold that he would want the job but if he does I think he would be a good hire.
Not sold on Bray one way or another. Holding an interim coach title (at Nebraska in Bray's case) is pretty close to meaningless when it comes to coaching resumes. It's basically a placeholder during a transition.

Gonna vote no on Lindgren.
Jay Harbaugh is a very interesting possibility but he's still pretty young at 34 and doesn't have coordinator experience.
I mentioned Riley as a temporary fix. Maybe OSU could do that and bring in Jay Harbaugh with the idea that he takes over in two years or whatever.

Hard no on Harsin. Dude got fired because he is a grade A asshole. Not because he wasn't as successful as Auburn expects.
People say Bray has no interest in being an HC, I have never heard him say it, but I think it is telling he isn't sticking around to be interim and immediately hitched his wagon to Smith, same with Lindgren. I think if both had desire, they would of stuck around and vied for the interim job. Neither are candidate. Both abandoned OSU for the same reason Smith did... they think we are dead and they want off the sinking ship.
I like Brennan the most. Show me a guy succeeding in a tough situation, and that is a guy that I like. Word is he is also a solid dude, and I want my coach to not suck as a human also. We've had one Anderpants already, lets not have another. Blake Anderson (no relation to Anderpants, and in fact, replaced him) is intriguing, I have reservations about hyper-Christians (not trying to start something, having faith is fine, being super evangelical about it is a red flag in my mind), but that said, he is a damn fine coach and we could double his salary and still save money over Smith

First and foremost we need a recruiter/salesman. I hesitate to think any current FCS coach fits that bill. Perhaps Choate but he's probably got bigger aspirations. I'd add Odom and Tetford to that list over the FCS guys.

We are far past the Riley era and we need to leave any residual of it in the past. I mean, I think there should be a better reason to not hire Riley than he's been a head coach at OSU twice before. The Riley era was very successful by OSU football standards. I would hope we're not far past that. If you think Riley is too old, then OK. But he's a pretty good coach with a lot of connections and decent name power. OSU could do far, far worse at this point. Having said all that, I have no idea if he'd even be remotely interested. |
