So here we are, wondering what will happen to the Pac-2 for the next year, maybe two. What I do know is that unless the Pac-2 makes a big U-turn, the two teams will be either cobbling together an independent schedule or coming to a scheduling agreement with the MWC. If that turns out to be the case, then it is obvious to me that merging with the MWC is not and never was the No. 1 plan for the Pac-2. Therefore I am going to make the assumption that the two school presidents, athletic directors and most likely the vast majority of other administrators, coaches and athletes would rather see what options might be available to the Pac-2 during that time. Maybe they don't want to take a budget hit of millions upon millions of dollars and the cuts that will follow. Maybe they don't want to risk losing coaches and a lot of the athletes. Maybe, just maybe, those who have fought for the two schools for the last few months have some other plan or plans that they are working on and those plans are not to do a full merger with the MWC unless all else is lost. Maybe they know what they're doing. I'm rooting for them to succeed.

Unless they find some new revenue streams the "budget hit and the cuts that follow" are going to happen whether we merge with the MWC or not.
I'm just not seeing any viable alternatives.

I would say they do, otherwise they would just bite the bullet and go ahead with a full merger. They are not going to move ahead (even for a year or two) without some sort of plan in place as well as backup plans.

The Pac-2 is probably hoping that something changes this year or next year to make the decision easier in 2026. If not, Oregon State and Wazzu probably merge the Mountain West and Pac-2 together. It would be a lot cleaner and easier then. And the schools could possibly generate more money then.

If I were the president of a school looking to make some noise, I would definitely send out a feeler to the Pac 2, especially now that they have all that money. Think of it....How many teams in the Big 10? 18? So you went from 10 to 12 to 14. Now 18. You've doubled in size and your odds of reaching the top have just gotten further.
Those schools finishing 4th and 5th could be finishing 8th and 9th. Meanwhile the Pac 2 has 2. Maybe they'll get up to 12 again with lots of luck. Those odds are a lot better than 1 in 18. Strategically, it makes sense.
