In California, they changed the shoplifting threshold several years ago to $950, so walking into a store and grabbing a set of irons is treated the same as grabbing a stick of deodorant. This is not shoplifting, and I don't know the value of what was taken.
It would not be shocking, however, if this was pleaded out as a misdemeanor, with probation and the record expunged when they turn 18. Actually, it would shock me if something like that isn't the eventual outcome.

Thousands of dollars of cash and jewelry was stolen from both locker rooms.
