Sign a big contract, do it for 3 years or so...do bad enough to get fired and collect a boat load of cash that sets you and your family up for life. Like a CEO with a golden parachute... Jonathan is making just under 5 million a year right now, and there can be bonuses. He could stick here for 3 years or so then pull a Peterson and retire and still be set for life - unless he has quite high end tastes. I realize money is relative, in general the more you have, the more you tend to spend. The big question is whether he wants the challenge or the glory that comes with coaching a "big" name school. He's young enough he just may. I spoke to Dennis Erickson briefly (very briefly) at the Stanford game. I really wanted to ask him...."If some big name program came calling for Smith, what would your advice to him be?" But alas, I didn't...maybe because I feared the answer of 'GO FOR IT KID' |

Dennis is one of many who 'went for it' and regretted it. In his case, it was the siren song of the NFL. That's, perhaps, understandable - but he still wound up regretting it.
I (naively?) believe that, if the conference weren't imploding, Jonathan would stay right here. Now? Maybe Scott Barnes could answer that, but I can't.

We can only hope he's enjoyed the challenge of coaching a team into being a "big" name school - let's face it, when you're ranked 10, you're suddenly a big name - and wants to enjoy that success for awhile. |

San Diego State Coach Hoke retiring after this season. Brady was a great assistant under Kragthorpe and Pettibone before going off to Michigan. A great guy, too. We've had numerous future head coaches on various staffs the past 30 years - Brady, Rocky Long, Bronco Mendenhall, Tim Camp, Lee Hull, Ian Shields, Paul Chryst, probably several others I missed. |
