What's your first impression of the MBB freshman class? I like it.
Gavin Marrs: 7 footer who can push the elevator button. Nice quickness. Finished game with 6 pts, 2 rebounds, 1 asst, 1 steal and 1 block. Looked very comfortable playing the top of the 1-3-1 press. Has been compared to Kylor Kelley.
Da'John Craig: Played well against Southern Oregon and got noticed. Second act confirms it, could be a scorer off the bench when he spells Pope. Finished game and led non-starters with 9 points.
Josiah Lake II: Walk on that plays like a Pac12 scholarship player. Filled the stat sheet with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals. He's a riser. Stock up.
Thomas Ndong: Flashed some potential. Will need to develop but a nice piece for WT.

Went to them game and agree on all points. Especially surprised and excited about Lake II. He contributed all over the court and looks to be an additional scorer as well. Entire roster played - no one with extensive minutes. Marrs and Ndong don’t look like freshmen although they most certainly need to develop - encouraging to watch them. Craig is exciting but had definite freshman moments. If Rataj has improved as has been indicated he will be a major addition. All in all it was interesting to watch and this could be a fun team to watch develop this year.

Getting to watch this years team play together for the first times.
The offense seemed really clunky when Chol and KC were in the game. It just seemed off. In games where teams don’t feature big guys or thick guys I see these 2 struggling to get minutes.
Craig can score, I didn’t watch his defense but I really think he’s major high upside
Gavin played a great game what the team needs from him this year. Make your put backs, make your free throws, defend…….hopefully he gets more interested in getting rebounds. I think a lot of guys will like playing with him because he’s not looking to shoot or score every time down court. His assist was my favorite pass of the night
Thomas goes after the ball……he had some good moments tonight, but playing against a band of midgets didn’t not play to his skill set. It was really quite painful to watch Thomas, KC and Chol tonight against these guys.
Lake seems like an absolute walk on steal. I’m sure he will be on scholarship here or somewhere by next year.

My first impression of the frosh is that they are better than D3 players. Yeah I know, a smart a$$ answer, but really difficult to get any real read when they are just better/more athletic than their opponents. If they don’t look good against Linfield than it will be a long season because we’ll need contributions from the group in order to have any real success.
That said, I was very impressed with Lake. As I posted in game thread, he may lack some of the athletic measurables, but kid is a basketball player. That he is a walk on is crazy.
Mars has plenty of the athletic measurables. I think he’ll have his growing pains, but won’t be surprised at all if he makes the difference in several wins this year. Going to be fun to watch him develop.
Craig has some offensive skills. Need to see him against better competition to make any real assessment.
I only watched first half and other than hearing his name so I know he played, I have no real recollection of Ndong’s play.

But honestly, the difference in D1 players and D3 players has never been about game knowledge or shooting skill. It’s always been about size and athleticism The best shooters I’ve ever seen were NAIA dudes in Iowa. Well and Blake Ahearn and Ted Dupey. I just watch the 10 returners that I’ve seen play D1 basketball and compare them to the 4 freshman that I’ve never watched. Thomas and Gavin, we aren’t really looking for scoring ability as much as we are looking at how well do they play with Pope and Tyler and Dexter. If craig can score against Troy and App state…….I’d say he’s the real deal (I think he’s gonna be a great scorer)
