Gervais and its football team to host first home playoff game since 1951
The first round of the high school football state playoffs kick off Friday night, and there's a buzz in Gervais.
The Cougars are preparing for their first playoff appearance in 10 years and just their fourth in program history. Perhaps more exciting, the team and their fans in the small town north of Salem are gearing up for their first playoff game on their home field since 1951, according to the Statesman Journal's research of its archives.
Gervais hosts Toledo at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round of the 16-team Class 2A playoffs.
The only other home playoff game in program history was in 1951, when Gervais finished as the state runner-up at what was then the Class B level.
The Cougars won their first-round game that year on a neutral field, then beat Creswell 21-0 at home on Thanksgiving Day to advance to the state championship. They lost 34-0 to Wallowa in the title game at La Grande.
Gervais is 8-1 this season under coach JJ Navarrete, matching the team's combined wins in its previous five years. Navarrete took over the program in 2019.
The Cougars' last trip to the playoffs was in 2013 — ending a 60-year drought — and they stumbled 49-0 at Harrisburg. Their only other playoff appearance was in 1953, when they lost 41-20 to Amity in Newberg.

Old Capital Leave foes from the late 70's Yep. The ones I remember are Central High, Stayton, Cascade, Woodburn, North Marion, Serra Catholic, Scio, Santiam and JFK from Mt. Angel from the 1962-1967 era.

So who do they play next? And are they at home again? Gervais will play at No. 2 Oakland in the quarterfinals on Friday in the second round of the OSAA Class 2A state playoffs. Oakland is about 17 miles north of Roseburg.
