You're completely out of line... I was/am "dogging" you... and your exaggerated hype. Best athlete yet??? And, nice of you to "dog" his teammates while being completely clueless about who I was actually commenting. But, thx... "fish" fully snared and revealed for who he is. Was this team not terrible last year? I do believe Michael is going to be a stud this year when he gets up to speed again (he had a fabulous off season), and I believe Tyler will improve a good bit his battle will be that he’s the classic inbetweener Going into this season we knew who are 28 to 35 minute guards were going to be. We knew exactly who our centers were going to be. Fleshing out the forwards and putting Thomas and Gavin in spots to succeed should have been a bigger priority (because the spot is thin and because people are gonna get hurt) The main thing to figure out who is going to take the minutes of the small forward and a power forward with Tyler and Michael are not in the game. The guards received 122 minutes of playing time, the small forwards received 27 minutes, the power forwards received 28 minutes, and the centers who we already know who they are going to be only received 23 minutes which I’m totally good with. And....as you state: "who are probably gonna be terrible again this year." Glad the kid you support isn't like you!

I get that, when I was an 18 yr old freshman I got the most minutes in the exhibition games and the NAIA, D3, D2 games…..because the team I was on beat the ever living hell out of those teams and we had plenty of rope to screw up. It’s more about getting used to playing on that stage……so that you’re more prepared when it matters. I and most other high school kids played in cramped gyms with 300-500 people and a low ceiling. You played college basketball? If so, what position did you play? I was a 4/5 at a time when 6’8 guys could still play 5

Well he doesn’t like that I said Gavin was the most athletic guy over 6’9 in his class that I had seen on the AAU circuits, which I’ve seen most anyone worth seeing west of the Mississippi (I said that a month or two back) I Based that statement on what I saw him do against other Top 250 recruits in his class including a top 10 recruit named Baye Fall that is going to Arkansas, and several other high major recruits…….and he was playing out of position as a 5 when he’s a 4/3 forward. When a kid is forced to play 5 his entire career and he’s a 4/3 forward. The curve is a bit steeper……but regardless of where he is in his on court performance…….the athleticism is undeniable and confirmed by coaches, staff and players alike. Every time his name is brought up, his athleticism is the first thing mentioned. He will bulk up when it’s his time, his dad looks like a Tight end, I saw his uncle one time at a game in Arizona and that guy looked like he coulda played Defensive end for the Seahawks. Gavin is just slow on the bulking curve. He’s probably also mad that I have the utmost belief in an unproven kid based on all the factors I’ve witnessed. Donald Watts son played on his AAU team, and Donald absolutely loved him…Watts was a UW player and said “guys that size aren’t supposed to be able to move like that” I feel that my eyes and ears work really well and that my thoughts and opinions have been confirmed by people who I believe also know the game. But……..it’s a team sport and you need to be what the team needs you to be. If you aren’t ready to be what the team needs you to be you work on becoming that player.

Lol... as usual smails enters a fray and spouts his nonsensical musings. First, my debate with "ward" has what to do with WT? Not sure "ward" or I spoke of WT or his "success". Weird... but that's your typical gaslighting. As for any successes, WT's what? 52 games under.500 in conference play. Under .500 overall. Followed an E8 with? More successes? Nope? In OSU MBB history there have been 22 HCs, only 10 have coached 100+ games and WT has the 3rd worst record, Eddie .371, Jay .426, Wayne .446. I hate the job he's done and once in a blue moon momentum he wasted. I don't hate the man at all. He and his wife are actually quite nice people and fit the Oregon State culture quite nicely. As for "ward" I simply called out his insider exaggerated BS... "I’d be very surprised if there is a freshman in the COUNTRY over 6’9 that can jump as high or run as fast as him." " I promise you, he is by far the MOST IMPRESSIVE ATHLETE on this team……that’s not me saying he’s the best basketball player. That’s me saying he has more god given abilities than anyone out there from a size/speed/athleticism standpoint. What the coaches do with it over the next 4-60 months is on them." But, he can't crack what "ward" states will be a terrible team again this year?! Then claims I "dogged" Gavin when I've not mentioned Gavin's skills or play other than getting man handled. Yet "ward" dogged last year's team/players and already this season's. Quite the dichotomies... worth calling out.

Rgeorge
You were fighting me long before the dichotomies you speak of. So I Call BS. Your crap toward me started long before the most recent thread you quoted.
I’d hope a 200 LB guy that played 15 high school basketball games In The last 3 years would get man handled by 4/5 interior players at a PAC 12 school. Especially early on in the practice season.
You’re right about one thing our conversation never revolves around WT so that was a cheap throw in by the other responder.
I have faith that the coaching staff has a good plan to use his length and speed in the 1-3-1 zone…….and that he will be used to guard the 3’s that are difficult to guard. Last I heard he is playing tomorrow (rumor is he asked to redshirt and the staff told him “no way”)

Unfortunately Linfield will not be a remotely decent barometer of how anyone plays. I've seen the kid play in HS. I saw him in part if a practice session. You claimed no one else in the NATION his size could run or jump like him. I called out such blatant exaggeration from someone who's obviously too close to be objective. That's how it began. It was that simple. Ward you do you. I never "dogged" the kid, nor have any agenda against you. However, it was you that dogged his entire team before one game was played. You then continued with he's the best athlete on the team. Pivoted and put it on the coaching staff to then make him a player. Go support the program Ward. Maybe they will surprise you and turn out to not be so terrible?!

Maybe they will surprise you and turn out to not be so terrible?! Guards are the only players on the floor that control how the game is played. I’ve seen inside players boys and girls from 13 to 18. They didn’t have good guards on their teams and it really limited them. Generally why you see teams with the best guards do very well in the NCAA tournament. You know this…….. you keep arguing with me on the point of me saying that I haven’t seen anyone his size jump as high as he has and I haven’t seen anyone his size run as fast as he has…… you also talk about watching him in high school which you have all people would know that he hasn’t stepped on a high school basketball court with anybody that he should be playing against on a regular basis. Trying to gauge the talent level of a player who plays against 2A Washington competition, is pretty difficult. The claim that I made was, there’s probably nobody who is both (in his class, at his size). Nobody has come with anything to refute that yet. Including you……you don’t know his verticals, you don’t know his shuttle times……I’ll be excited to watch……I believe the rate he improves and his trajectory will be amazing. I appreciate your tempered expectations, there are 4000 NCAA division, one college basketball players at any given time. If you don’t buy into any hype, generally you are going to be correct on the assessment of each player individually. It will be fun to see what it looks like on the floor today. I’m giving you the last word……..

I'm not sure I have ever seen "goal posts" moved so many times?? A bit desultory in jumping all over. Talk about a scattershot approach signifying nothing?! Hence... none required to the OP But, Ohio do you remember a roster at OSU in recent memory with as much overall length? I'm not sure there is any great "talents" over sustained minutes. But, there is enough depth with length that even short minutes should give some teams trouble. Just not sure how stable and fluid the offense will be?

I guess if they are going 3 guards most of the year then the time allotment makes a lot more sense. I’m clearly not an expert on Beaver basketball, I’m 15-20 games deep in my watching. What I noticed last year was most obviously they couldn’t score. Secondly they could not defend at a high level at the end of games that they were leading or within a few points. In the games I watched better defense down the stretch would have been worth 3-5 more wins in the conference games. They led plenty of games with 8 minutes to play (that they lost) Also I won’t name names but there are some guys that are consistently in foul trouble and are not good defenders……what causes foul trouble? In my playing and coaching experience my answer would be lack of athleticism and lack of positioning and or footwork. My opinion: Thomas and Gavin are very much needed right now defensively to help close out games. I know Thomas has a bit more polished offensively, Gavin was never gonna be the guy to go 5-7 from 12-15 feet out, but that’s not what they need him to be. They need him to shut down shooting forwards, and get his points on defense and put backs. I’m excited to see how it plays out and I’ll be happy to eat whatever crow you wanna serve me if I’m wrong. Games that Oregon State was within three with 8 or fewer minutes to play that they lost: Portland State Duke USC Oregon x2 Arizona State x2 Difference between an awful season and a postseason berth of some kind. I would add that the Duke loss set up the next two losses, and the conference losses set up the one-and-done showing in Vegas (and the just awful officiating in that game). I have generally ascribed poor finishing to inferior talent or depth. Hopefully, Oregon State can be a couple of points better down the stretch of each game and turn it around this year.

Last year’s team literally had 3 returning players and 1 was injured most of the season. A couple other players that were expected to contribute were injured much of the season. They finished next to last in the PAC, yet if they had won just 3 more league games that had been tight games they’d have been 8th - not terrific but quite better. This season they have 10 returning players, two may have some injury issues (Rataj for a few weeks apparently and Rochelin unknown, we’ll see if he plays today) otherwise we’ll see how injuries go this season. Our experience level is significantly increased, our overall height and depth in the front court appears to be significantly increased. Hopefully injuries do not play a big role this year, and what were tight losses last year become wins this year. It would be nice to be in the middle of the league or better with what is still a relatively young team. I’m looking forward to hopefully watching one of the fastest and jumpiest (is that a word?) big men in college basketball get a few minutes of playing time in this afternoon.
