JFC. This story loses what little shred of credibility it had in the very first paragraph. In the months following the liquidation of the Pac-12, two of its members are still wondering what their future holds, and if having FBS athletic programs will continue to be a staple of their makeup.NO ONE has ever suggested we will drop down to FCS. This story is total garbage. The Big Ten had fully vetted Washington and Oregon State but had determined it wasn't going to expand any more before FOX tipped the scales toward another round of expansion by deciding to break up the conference once and for all and (temporarily) stymie Apple by throwing $70 million more into the pot. There is no evidence whatsoever they've done any kind of a dive, much less the deep dive necessary to invite us. We're not going to the Big 10. We're not going to the ACC. It would be an out-and-out miracle at this point to receive an invitation from the Big 12, we'd have to have photos of the commish and the 14 presidents in compromising positions. Putting on my tin foil hat, I can see the Big 12 finding a spot for OSU/WSU if ESPN/Fox decide there is something to gain from killing off the Pac12. As in, they are looking at the long term picture and gauging whether CBS or Apple gains a foothold in a market they have a strangle hold on by funding a West Coast based league with a TV deal that keeps them competitive with the big boys back east. A key reason, among many reasons, for the Pac-12 demise was the failure to expand when the opportunity presented. One of many Scott failures in a long line of them. Yormack is well aware of this. Doesn't mean they will, but as more reliable tweets indicate, they will evaluate options that keep the conference strong. Saying anything one way or another doesn't reflect the actual statement that have been made.

I’m convinced all of these articles are conjecture based on the writer’s thoughts at the time, and are a complete waste of time. There’s most likely more well thought out, knowledgeable scenarios posted here by our own members. They just need clicks and getting them posted to a place like this will drive the clicks.

ESPN and Fox decided there was something to gain from killing off the Pac 12 (or really, any one of the lesser Power conferences) a long time ago. Long before they sponsored sc and fucla joining the big 10 in the Summer of 2022. Long before they made it no secret that they would finance the big 12 getting more P5 schools--with a wink and a nod to the four corner schools. And long before Thursday, August 3, 2023, the day the death blow was dealt to the Pac 12 when FOX decided to put up the money for uo and uw to join the B1G at a B1G discount. At a minimum, ESPN and Fox assisted in the death off the Pac 12. The ACC ate the carrion corpses that were left of 'furd and bezerkely and none of the other P4 conferences gave enough of a _____ to take OSU and WSU. The big 10 took the four biggest schools from the Pac 12, the big 12 took the next four, and then the last four were left for dead. OSU and WSU are left to rebuild, but they're not getting any P5 schools to join. The Pac X will be a G5 conference made up of G5 teams plus the Beavs and the Cougs. Which is redundant in saying now because the market has spoken and it has relegated the Beavs and Cougs to G5 status. Maybe the Pac X can hold on to its one saving grace, an automatic CFP bid, but they're not getting any kind of media contract that resembles those of even the ACC or the Big 12. There is one less Power conference that ESPN and Fox have to pay now, one less Power conference that can demand Power conference money, even at the lower ends of it. And that is what ESPN and Fox gained (and intended to gain) from killing off the Pac 12: one less conference to pay.

Plot twist: PAC-2 gets awarded all of the money. Takes out a loan against the money and partners with Apple to buy a share of ESPN. Pays self-back and has exposure on Apple and ESPN.

And afterwards, Barnes is recognized as the world's top negtiator and wins the 2024 election as a write-in candidate. Just sayin' a lot of things would have to go right.

And, Apple does not need any partners. They could buy out ESPN from Disney anytime they wanted. But, why now when it is a depreciated asset that could be got for fire sale pricing if they opted in for the PacWest14 media deal. If their streaming entry into college sports proved successful on this "smaller" scale they'd be a mighty force come the next media negotiations. Even a partnered/combo media deal with the MWC partners (CBS?) and Apple could lead them to be a huge pain in ESPN and Fox. With Disney hemorrhaging $$ ESPN might easily become a bargain for Apple to then offer dual media services. But, if there is a plan(s) in place depending on the outcome of the court case, I'm guessing it includes a media deal that makes sense and is one that is based on lucrative growth potential.

ESPN and Fox put in the work to cripple it, but deciding to deal the death blow (and spending the money to do it) by financing WSU/OSU's invitation to the Big12 is a different move. It would arguably be a net negative result, since the general consensus is that the two schools do not add the value commensurate with the cost to add them. This is different than the reorganization that has happened so far, as most have been judged to be a net positive for all the parties involved. A win/win if you will. This is a different calculation, not a short term balance sheet proving out but rather a long range plan to lock down market share.

Except that ESPN and Fox could theoretically wipe off future debt on the money that Oregon State and Wazzu make. If ESPN and Fox get access to the Pac-X future money, there is no reason not to invite Oregon State and Wazzu to the Big 12 as a Pac-X/Big-12 merger, at least on a trial or probationary basis. If they control the Pac-X's future assets, Oregon State and Wazzu more than pay for themselves. Of course, if the Whitman County case does not shake out right, there is limited chance, absent Oregon State or Wazzu just doing amazingly well in football or basketball this year.
