They are way to comfortable at the plate right now. Back in the day guys like Nolan Ryan and Bob Gibson would take care of that , but now if you pitch in off the plate hitters want to charge the mound

I don't think he's worried about getting hit.

It's been a while since I played baseball. Saying that, turning your back was a protective mechanism. Now your entire left side (for right handed hitters) is protected. So don't turn. Let the pitch bounce off your left arm armor.

I suspect if you've ever gotten hit on the elbow by a 97-MPH fastball (I haven't) you wouldn't be so quick to pooh-pooh those elbow pads.

Ive been hit by a maybe 70mph pitch and it hurt like hell. I'm not poo-pooing it at all. I'm just saying it's different now than 50 years ago. And before my time guys didn't even wear batting helmets (or skullcaps, your choice). And that sounds completely insane.

Yes, thankfully the days of pitchers like Drysdale, Ryan and Gibson routinely endangering players by throwing behind them or at their heads to intimidate them is over.
