The Oregonian piece by Rick Metzger is abject fantasy. What's our path to a bowl game, since every one has a conference tie-in? What do we play for if there is no conference championship?
And he makes no provision for OSU's other sports. What league(s) do they compete in? What is their path to postseason play?
Independence is a UMass/UConn path to football irrelevance.

The bowl game issue is a huge issue, but I am assuming that we swing a deal with ESPN like Army, Navy, and BYU did. Hell, with BYU now in the Big 12, BYU's spot is now open. The Pac-2 Conference Champion goes to the Cheez-It Bowl, if there is a spot available. If not, the Pac-2 Conference Champion (or runner-up, if there is an opening in the Cheez-It Bowl) goes to an ESPN Events Bowl in 2024 and the Independence Bowl in 2025. As for other sports, the teams play in the Pac-2. The Champion earns an automatic spot in the postseason. They do not lose the spot, because the conference has two members. Oregon State or Washington State gets an automatic spot in the NCAA Basketball and Baseball Tournaments. That stops after two years, but you can have up to two years of that.

I wouldn't count on that automatic spot in basketball if it's just 2 teams in the Pac. They (every other conference in NCAA basketball) have 17 months to figure out how to keep a 2 team conference from getting an automatic spot, or just flat out change the rules, especiallyif neither is a great team. I wouldn't count on football either, too many unknowns at this point.

Conferences must have six members to maintain an NCAA automatic berth. NCAA rule forever.
We can maintain the conference with two members but not the automatic berth.

You can maintain the conference, but you lose the automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA Basketball Tournament for each year that you have fewer than six teams. If they are going to stall for a year or two in football, Oregon State and Wazzu should join another conference (like the Mountain West) for all other sports.

Which assumes the MWC will take BB/Oly only. So far they have refused to do that. They told BYU no football then no membership. Probably all NCAA post season play like Baseball, etc is on the line to lose. WCC is made up of small and private schools. In the West that leaves the Big West or drop all the way down to the Big Sky. Just not much choice in the west.

If the Pac-X indicates that they will take at least 10 Mountain West schools after a year or two, that would hopefully be enough for the Mountain West to allow Oregon State and Wazzu to join for all other sports. If not, you are right that Oregon State and Wazzu would be looking at the WCC, Big West or Big Sky.

To remain an FBS conference you must maintain teams in at least 16 sports. not sure if there is a window to maintain that.
