OK, I can't claim to pay rapt attention to what's going on elsewhere in the nation, and it seemed like from a distance the politicians in Arizona were engaged in all sorts of weird election related gyrations every time I did look in that direction..... But it also appears they took pause in whatever weirdness they were indulging in long enough to legislatively tie the conference-related fates of the two flagship state schools in Arizona together - saving their taxpayers and citizens of the state much anguish, conflict and cost.
As we prep for some "day before those fine folks in Salem"........why were Oregon legislators so asleep at the wheel not to do something similar to what was going on in Arizona? (surprised I wrote that, but not sure the statement says more about the folks in AZ or those in Salem). Sigh.
Go Beavers!!

Go Beavers!! it was tried and failed in committee (or whatever they call it)...and IIRC if it did happen it wouldn't take effect until 1/1/24....so day late and a bunch of dollars short

Arizona and Arizona State already had a shared board. They really could not move independent of one another. Oregon State's failure was to get outmaneuvered by Oregon and allowing Oregon to separate their board from Oregon State's.

Us having our own Board of Trustees making decisions about our university, instead of the State Board of Higher Education, has been very beneficial to OSU. Our university has flourished in research funding, capital projects and enrollment far more than Oregon has since the schools were de-coupled.

All the Universities have separate boards in the state operating independent of one another. Southern Oregon, Western Oregon, Oregon Tech, Eastern Oregon and Portland State are separately run too. Their bylaws state that each is to operate for the best interest of that school in which they serve.

This hasn't played out yet. In the end, Oregon may rue the day they killed the Pac 12.

Oregon State's failure was to get outmaneuvered by Oregon and allowing Oregon to separate their board from Oregon State's. To be somewhat fair, I highly doubt they ever envisioned this scenario. Because with Oregon being semi-distinct, it really hasn't negatively impacted the academics of OSU at all. We get more state funding then them, we are a bigger university, we have more affiliations, grants, research etc. The only place Oregon really ended up succeeding in this is athletics and that only happened because of one dude. While athletics has been up and down in the past 20 years, and currently up. Academics has been nothing but going up. Securing major donations, building new programs, expanding everywhere.
