Made it out to Viking Pavillion tonight. Never been. Beautiful facility.
Dropped the match 1-3.
PSU was just better. Less unforced errors, better ball placement on sets and bumps and an amazing ability to block our kills enough to rally their own bump, set, spike (is there slang for that progression?). They had better athletes as well. Will always puzzle me why OSU can't out recruit a PSU.
Also puzzling; I watched my two girls play high school volleyball and the one thing that used to frustrate me is when the team was needing to bump the ball over on the third hit they would almost always bump it to the middle at the ten foot line; which I came to learn was a free ball, allowing the other team to set up. The Beavers did that alot tonight and PSU did not. I'm in no way a volleyball aficionado but I would like to think if I was coaching the players I would challenge them to hit it deep to the corners. It may take awhile to get good at that but in time will be a big asset.
Another thing on the idea of ball placement is; players would approach for a kill and then push it over but it did nothing but give PSU a chance to set up.
OSU got called a few times for a double hit? by the setter which I felt was shaky. At one point in the fourth set, at a tenuous time, OSU's setter was called for a double hit and coach blew up a little at the call. She received a red card and I think PSU even got a point for that. From what I remember by watching my girls play is if the ball passed from one hand to the other on the set or spins off the setters hand it will be called. I didn't see either of that happen on the set.
I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and there were some great rallies.
Lastly, PSU what very good at digging out our kills.
