The whole deal about cash is, there's not a pile of cash sitting around. There's assets, some liabilities, and a heck of a lot of NCAA money coming in from basketball tournament money and likely elsewhere for several years... just not a big pot of money laying around that is immediately available.
Some read there there's not a big pot of money laying around as though there's no money. I'm pretty sure they are wrong, as the Basketball money already to be distributed in the future alone has been estimated to be in the 60-70 million or more range over a several year period. Per bylaws, it would be split with WSU (and any other teams OSU & WDU decide to let in on it) as it comes in. Canzano came up eith 420 million, the article linked earlier today came up with about 400 million apparently (depending on how you read it). There is money coming, just not all at once.
According to league bylaws, everyone who has announced leaving has walked away from that money. They're going to have to find a legal loophole to get it.

The last I saw, OSU's endowment is over $800 million, with future commitments pushing it well over a billion. I have never seen what, if any, portion of that is dedicated to sports. I do not believe there is a specific athletic endowment fund. This is what OSU needs. My alma mater has one, part of its $3+ billion endowment.

Some portion of that $800m may have been earmarked by donors for sports or sports-related purposes. It would be nice to know how much, but I imagine that the powers-that-be prefer to give new donors the impression that previous donors didn't put strings on their gifts. <shrug>

Put some of it in an endowment. Have to set up some kind of consistent, dependable long-term revenue stream. NIL money is given, then spent immediately. Donations do not fund coaching salaries, capital projects, or annual operations. To me, it's the least-effective use of my dollar. Other's mileage probably varies. This right here, this! I will probably donate money to the NIL push, but I would MUCH rather donate money to an endowment where my donation can provide an income in perpatuity! Pipe dream I know, but if we could build up a 500 million dollar ATHLETICS endowment (FYI, the 800 million dollar ACADEMIC endowment, gives nothing to the athletics department... and I don't think you can "earmark" endowment donations, the whole point is for that donation to NOT be spent, but to be invested and used to generate INCOME), with a very conservative investment giving 3% income (not 3% returns, much of the returns goes back into the pot to keep up with inflation) that would be a nice 15 million dollar a year income... in other words ALL of the coaches salaries. Lets say we only get 100 million from the "War Chest" over the next 6 years, and in that time donors can match it (Recall just a couple donors put up the ~70 million to kick off the West side of Reser project). A 200 million dollar endowment is a great start, at 3% that is still 6 million a year, IOW enough to make sure Jonathan smith is well paid. None of this will probably happen of course. If for no other reason than I now have 0.00000% trust in college leaders and academics to make a sensible decision.

All this chatter about coaches and their salaries is a bit over the top.
Yep, it'd be nice to keep those we want. But, there is no endowment that can be created quickly that will keep big $ schools from offering. OSU pays pretty much what it'll always pay with gradual increases.
OSU is never going to pay $6 mil+ for a ftbll coach. OSU's staff salaries will never increase significantly in comparison to those schools with large budgets, huge TV $, and 60k+ attendance, and big NIL $.
Yep... OSU needs to secure funding. But, if big time schools come calling and a coach wants big $, OSU can't match. And, never will as 16 other sports also need funding for OSU to stay D1.
OSU will never be able to break the bank to keep one coach. Not unless a huge donor comes aboard.

CDs are at 5% now, with a dedicated athletic endowment fund we could do much better than 3%.

As it is, Jonathan is set to make somewhere just shy of 5.5 million in base salary in ‘28 if he’s still here and hasn’t had an extension that changes things. If things go as expected and OSU is no longer a P5 school, ever, then that 6 million mark might not happen for a while, then again, 25 rears ago we were paying 200k for a pretty darned good coach. 200k to 4.7 million is a lot of salary inflation in just 25 years.

The internet says SanDiego was paying him 750k a year.

Lawsuits will tie up this money for a while is my first guess.... but if for some reason it does not, depending on the price, it might be good to pull some good teams into the conference by allocating buy out funds or using some to supplement the lower TV deal until the conference gets rolling.

If that happens then the rights to the Pac-12 brand, etc. will also be tied up. Which would mean that a reverse merger with the MWC would be a no go until a decision is made. And just joining the MWC in the meantime would defeat the purpose of all of this.
