fororegonstate.org/stay-informed/impact-stories/detail/can-you-be-leaf-it-osu-s-campus-is-a-classified-arboretumAugust 29, 2022 This summer, Oregon State University achieved a significant milestone for its commitment to environmental education, conservation and community engagement. The College of Agricultural Sciences recently announced its arboretum status designation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. The classification as an official arboretum was led by horticulture graduate student Dan Blanchard and underscores OSU's dedication to preserving and showcasing the rich diversity of woody plant life on Oregon State’s campus. The new arboretum status signifies more than just a change in title. It's a testament to the university's dedication to education, research and conservation. Oregon State’s arboretum includes more than 65,000 plants in 95 families, 244 genera, and more than 1,000 species native to every continent except Antarctica. The campus arboretum provides an invaluable educational resource for students, researchers, alumni and the wider community. Moreover, it serves as a dynamic living-learning laboratory for the university and the surrounding community. It supports the university’s land grant mission of teaching, research, and outreach and engagement while OSU strives to become a leader in plant evaluation, conservation, plant introductions, public horticulture and biodiversity education. As a living embodiment of OSU's values, the campus arboretum is a powerful reminder of the importance of safeguarding our natural world for generations to come.

Whenever I walk or bike through campus now, I am struck by the sheer beauty of the campus. I spent from 1987 - 1999 going to school there, and seem to have not found the time during those years to absorb how amazing the campus is..... It is indeed an arboretum. Much of the campus plan was laid out by the Olmsted Brothers ( Fredrick Olmsted designed Central Park in NYC) back in the early 1900s, so this didn't become an arboretum overnight....... And now we dodge food delivery robots while we take in the beauty ("It's like walking the hallways of the Star Wars Death Star" said one of my visitor friends :-)). Go Beavers!

I have no idea of the controls in their usage, but there are far too many roaming around! It used to be cute, now it is an eye sore and inconvenient at times.

Fredrick Law Olmsted was the designer of Central Park in NYC. But by the time of the OSU master plan he was long gone. The Olmsted Brothers firm was led by his nephew/adopted son John Olmsted and son Fredrick Jr. They developed park and campus plans for clients throughout the country.

Do you have a source for this? Oregon State University’s campus is renowned for its architectural harmony. This was a key goal of the 1909 Olmsted Brothers’ Plan and all subsequent Campus Plans. Per OSU’s Historic Preservation Plan (2010), “Olmsted had provided President William Jasper Kerr in 1909, a type-written sixty page report which described in detail the future development of the university’s campus. While the Olmsted firm did not provide any maps or drawings to accompany the report, a drawing of the plan was drafted in 1910 by landscape architecture professor Arthur Lee Peck. The drawing showed the creation of quadrangles and grouping of buildings. One important aspect of the plan was to develop architectural unity for the campus, which was primarily implemented by architect, John V. Bennes.”Per tour.library.oregonstate.edu/

Do you have a source for this? I should have been more verbose - the Olmsted Brothers was a firm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Olmsted_worksNote Oregon State shows up on the list of Academic campuses to which they contributed. I was trying to reference where people might have heard the name "Olmsted" before (hence my mention of Fredrick of Central Park fame). Regardless, if you bike/walk through McNary Field (between 11th and 14th), the rows of what I suspect are 100 year old trees makes you realize that the arboretum designation is well deserved, and took many years to come into being...... Go Beavers!
