Similar might even be a stretch here to what college sports is undergoing without of course the television money. But it was interesting at the time if was being changed.
The Oregon high schools (OSAA) underwent a reshuffling of classifications years ago and some traditional rivalries were to an extent disbanded and schools complained of more travel time due to this reshuffle, attendance issues etc? Was that an OSAA executive decision, schools decision or something else? I remember some really hated it, some loved it the way it is now. Anyone here have personal connections to these schools and if it was a good move today or do you miss the old Oregon high school conferences ? I am sure there are examples in other areas of the state.
An example below.
Southern Oregon Conference 1990's? Medford (*) Split at some point, North and South Medford Ashland Eagle Point Crater Hidden Valley Grants Pass Roseburg Klamath Union Mazama
*********************************** 4A Skyline Conference 2023
Henley - Hornets Hidden Valley - Mustangs Klamath Union - Pelicans Mazama - Vikings Phoenix - Pirates 5A Midwestern League 2023Ashland - Grizzlies Churchill - Lancers Crater - Comets Eagle Point - Eagles North Eugene - Highlanders Springfield - Millers Thurston - Colts 6A Southwestern League 2023 Grants Pass - Cavemen North Medford - Black Tornado Roseburg - Indians Sheldon - Irish South Eugene - Axe South Medford - Panthers Willamette - Wolverines

Well, people certainly got riled up over the travel time and upheaval around traditional rivalries. Other than that, the OSAA's intentions were to create a more fair level of competition by moving schools up or down classifications due to student population. School size and fair competition have nothing to do with what is going on with college sports right now.

I get the four-class system didn't work anymore but a 5-class system would have sufficed. But as the previous poster pointed out, money had nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with the mess they are making of college athletics, where the footprints of the Big Ten and Big 12 look like they were designed by some drunk guy.

Prior to that, we referred to them as the University of Medford. 2200 students at Medford Senior High. They’d have 100+ kids on their varsity football team and they were all Juniors and Seniors.

Those 2200 were in only two grades. I remember the average class was 1200 and not 1100. From about 1970 until the state playoffs expanded to allow more than one team from each league (1978), the three schools, Medford, Grants Pass and Roseburg had huge and significant games. Klamath was also a very big school but most of their success was basketball and baseball. Growing up in Roseburg, I remember two or three games when Medford was ranked #1 and Roseburg #2. The game may be in early October, but if you lose, you know there will be no playoffs. Maybe my youthful brain does not remember well, but I remember reported crowds over 10,000 at Spiegelberg Stadium.

That’s why I said all were Juniors and Seniors. 1979 was when Grants Pass split into 4 schools, yet when Medford spilt, they only went to 2 and then adjusted the boundaries for Crater and Phoenix to allow them to continue to be a powerhouse in sports.

There was a bond measure in Roseburg in (I think) 1983. If passed it would have built a second high school. It failed in large part because of people's fears that Roseburg would be crappy in sports. In retrospect it was good it did not because there are fewer kids at the high school now than 40 years ago.

I take it you remember their coach, Fred Spiegelberg. Ashland held is own at times in football. So did Crater.

Medford Senior High School was a great school. Yeah football was king, but the academics, activities, and facilities were first rate. I graduated in ‘78. How many high schools do you know have their own planetarium?

School size and fair competition have nothing to do with what is going on with college sports right now. As I recall, it was also the intention of not devaluing the top recruits in the state relative to other states. As dumb as it is, it looks better for the top athletes in the state to have 6A conference on their stat sheet instead of 4a
