It does not say Joey is the volunteer assistant coach, either on the tweet or the website. His job title is assistant coach. A paid position.

He may be getting paid by other funds, but Barnes refused to have the AD pay for the 3rd assistant spot. So by University hiring practices as I understand them he is a "volunteer" with regards to hiring status, and benefits. Unless Barnes changed his mind (on funding... even the "raise" Barney sought from outside funding) very recently, which would mean Barney's leaving was more about availability... to OSU and his family.

Barnes decision not to fund the 3rd paid assistant is indeed unfortunate, for him and for Mitch. As I recall, Barnes voted to fund the 3rd coach when the NCAA approved it.
A paid staff of Canham, Gipson, Barney, Dorman and Wong volunteering - imagine the amount and level of instruction our players would have received in every game and practice. Who wouldn't want to play for OSU with that staff?
It puts us at a disadvantage against the Omaha level competition I view as teams we need to beat every year. They will be paying that 3rd Assistant.

Not paying that 3rd assistant is really depressing. This is the first chink in the armor of our most successful athletic program.

Joey Wong has served as a volunteer assistant at Seattle U. for the past 2 seasons. SU baseball program has had it's ups and downs (2023: 20-31, RPI 176). Whether his position at OSU is a paid assistant or a "volunteer", this is a wonderful upgrade for him...not to mention being 'home' for a Beav/Salem native, with a young family. Losing Barney, a 3-time Omaha Beav, and a genuine MLB Gold Glover, is partially balanced out by replacing him with a guy that turned the greatest DP in Omaha history. And btw, Wong was an Australian League All-Star / Championship Series MVP, when Bazzana was a young teenager. www.facebook.com/watch/?v=277199580001964

DBar is no longer on the website as a coach. Maybe he's found a pro job or found the daily drive from the Portland burbs to be too taxing. He has four kids and has enough money to not work and spend more time with his family. He'd be a great HS coach, if that's what you're intimating. speaking of his money the net says his net worth is 500k. I'm surprised it's that low for a twelve year vet. Assuming he never got the big pay day.

Assuming he never got the big pay day. Darwin Barney made at least $10,578,535 over his 11 years. (I am unsure what and whether he got paid in his 12th year for the Rangers.) His biggest payday was his final year in the majors, 2017. His annual salary in 2017 was $2,887,500. If properly invested, he made more than enough money to retire and live comfortably for the rest of his life. It would be crazy to believe that, six years out of the majors, he is down to $500,000.

Is that information ever remotely accurate?

Is that information ever remotely accurate? His BBref page has his MLB career salary as $10,241,500 in his 8-year MLB career. As Wilky said, he was with the Rangers for Spring training of 2018. Not sure how much you get paid for that.
