Isn't there a scenario where the MW just dissolves and buyout penalties are avoided? They dissolve and OSU and Wazzu merge with them to create a new conference? Still, the new TV deal will be similar to what the MW is getting currently which means huge budget cuts in the AD. I think the current MW Conf media deal ends after the 24/25 year. I believe starting with the 25/26 year there's much more flexibility - no buy outs. So if OSU and WSU can cobble something together for 24/25, the next year we may have a respectable conference. If it’s just OSU and WSU, the Pac could in theory take 9 MWC schools immediately with ZERO buyout if they were to vote to dissolve the conference. That would allow for 5 other schools to join the conference to join to get to 16 teams, taking all 12 MWC schools would still allow 2 additional schools to join. www.mwcconnection.com/2023/8/4/23820343/conference-realignment-college-football-oregon-washington-arizona-boise-state-san-diego-state#:~:text=The%20Mountain%20West%20Dissolves&text=The%20Aztecs%20hopes%20of%20being,vote%20on%20dissolving%20the%20conference. I kind of lean towards taking them all. It would keep all of the existing rivalries together, no media would point fingers at OSU and WSU. It would kind of be a feel good story.

There are 11 teams in the Mountain West Conference, not 12. San Diego State, San Jose State, Fresno State, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, Boise State, Utah State, Air Force, Colorado State and Wyoming.
Hawaii is an affiliate member for football but is a member of the Big West Conference for all other sports. They play in a 9K stadium, are an expensive, inconvenient 5- or 6-hour plane ride away from their closest football opponent and basically offer nothing. The only reason they are in the MWC is for schedule balancing, so they have 12 teams. I would imagine the MWC would want nothing to do with them once they hook up with us and Wazzu.

The MWC exit fees are not tied to the media deal....They are in the conference by laws and are partially calculated on the media value but they never go away.

To dissolve the conference, I think the Moutain West has a rule (like all(?) conferences) that it takes a certain amount of teams to vote to dissolve the conference get it done without penalty to the teams that want to leave. I say we take that number of teams from the MWC and add them to the Pac. If the MWC has some sort of breakdown in which they wish to remain loyal, then take them all. I don't like the idea of adding Central/Eastern time zone schools from the G5. The contract money won't be worth it and it will put a burden on our athletes, to whom I would like to remain loyal. SDSU tried to get the 9 schools needed to breakaway and dissolve the MWC with no exit fees. The rest of the conference stuck together and said no. www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/san-diego-state-fails-in-attempt-to-create-new-power-five-conference-with-pac-12-mountain-west-aac-members/

And, it poached the AAC. A merger with the Pac4 to 15 teams (Hawai'i can go totally to ?? for football or stick Big West) might have been a better approach. Then you can vet a team for #16.
