There's an old poker term called a ‘Chip and a Chair'. It refers to the idea that a poker player can still go on to win an entire poker tournament even if they are down to their last chip. We might consider it similar to the expression ‘it’s not over until it’s over’. So long as we have a least one chip left and we are still sitting at the table, we are still in the running to potentially win the entire tournament. This is where we find the current Pac12 with Stanford, Cal, OSU and WSU as remaining members. One big question remains: does the Pac 12 still retain a playoff bid if it adds teams? If not, who would take the CFP bid away? Feels like a potential major legal battle because the only assets the Pac 12 has right now is the 4 remaining teams the playoff bid. This has got to be option one for the GK. Can the conference rally and backfill? 8 might be enough. We know SMU is ready, that's 5. Is there a 6th?
Some of this was taken from a question that Clay Travis posted on twitter.

I would assume if the Pac adds 8 appropriate teams, they'd still get an automatic bid. As it was a week ago with just 10 teams, I'm not so certain they would have.
There are a couple MWC teams that have played in BCS bowls the last couple decades, and a couple more that have been top 20 teams. I would assume if the league could get the best of the MWC and maybe the best of other leagues, they'd have a bunch of competitive teams and there'd be no reason for the NCAA to eliminate it's automatic bid.
The biggest issue would be buyouts. Even if they could only negotiate a 15-18 million a yeam medida deal it beats the heck out of 4 million or so a lot of these teams are getting currently, but some of those schools have huge buyouts they might have to swing up front.

The “automatic berth” was a question I had as well, and had not seen anyone mention it, so am glad you posted this… I wonder if we will be able to keep the automatic berth? It would be the best way for the Pac-12 to continue being relevant.
I don’t think we have to have 12 teams. 10 total would work well too, where in football we could have 9 conference games.

Hey Beavs, Cal fan here
The Pac-12 does not actually have an automatic berth to the playoffs because there are no berths assigned to individual conferences. The 6 highest ranked conference champions get automatic berths, no matter which 6 conferences those are.
Anyway, let me say I very much share your pain at the demise of the Pac and our common impending demotion out of the power conferences

Regarding buyouts of current Mountain West teams, when does their grant of rights or buyouts end? I read somewhere in the last 24 hours, that it ends after the 24-25 academic year. I have no idea if that is correct. If the Pac-4 waits, maybe there is a path. Beaverology has a good analogy. But we have more than a chip. Maybe a short stack.

Winning the conference this year would absolutely put me in continual fist pump mode. Make the final game against the condoms, fowl, or mongrels, and I would need surgery to remove my grin.

I totally agree but can already hear the excuses. Who cares about a lame duck conference championship? I’m afraid if we do win it, it will have an asterisk.

This guy's sources are all in the Big-12, so that leads me to believe this is a contingency plan assuming the invite never comes. Hoping for a resolution soon. Really hard to recruit to "you might be playing TCU and Oklahoma State in the Big 12, or you might be playing Wyoming and Nevada in a glorified G5 conference." I see way too many plans and theories about merging with these G5 teams or those G5 teams... and while I have no doubt we could be a fun team a la a Boise State or Fresno State, the hit to our program would be huge. Boise State had a great season last year, they went undefeated in the Mountain West... and after than 9-3 regular season they didn't even sniff the Top 25. Either way, I think you need a resolution soon. You can't have next year still uncertain once the season starts.
