Everyone needs to take their own history and situation into account. I have a pile of Autoimmune diseases that limit my activity and stress my body. So I have to eat clean and be really conscious of my choices as I'm aging like jaba the hut left out in the sun. I'm aging like Jabba in the sun anyway, I keep putting myself into the hospital with broken bones and destroyed joints. I'm into double digit surgeries at this point, and something CONSTANTLY hurts, lol. 4 left knee surgeries, 2 right shoulder surgeries, 4 surgeries on my left foot, maxiliofacial/orbital floor, gallbladder appendix. I still have another facial surgery that I'm putting off, because I'm frickin sick and tired of recovering from surgery. I'm sorry. I WISH we could click on a "NOT GOOD" emogi. I suffered from advanced arthritis in both knees for years until I FINALLY pulled the trigger (figuratively) and had them both replaced in early May. The PT is a biotch, but I can walk miles and miles without cringing today. Hurt like a sumbitch for a few weeks, right after though. Take care. Hopefully you'll be pain free in the near future. Pain sucks.

Boxed for a long time (hence the facial surgeries), played semi-pro paintball, ride mountain bikes, played in multiple soccer leagues, still ride dirt bikes, still ski 30+ days a year, am planning on going heli-skiing with my 15 year old daughter this year. I like to do cool stuff, most of the time it goes according to plan.

Thats really cool you get to do that with your daughter, I have heard great things from some of my friends that are still in the snow boarding game. Got any opinions on which combat martial arts for kids? My two boys want to Box/MMA but like most parents I'm worried about brain injuries. Theres a pretty good Jiu Jitsu/wrestling gym here so I was thinking about starting them with that to avoid head strikes and learn basics.

They wear BIG gloves and headgear, the emphasis is on point scoring and there is a standing 8 count rule if someone is wobbled even slightly by a flush strike. There is far less traumatic impact than pee wee football, by far. But it is not for everyone. Some people get in and spar the first time and immediately nope out. It's a different type of activity to climb into the ring with someone who is going to try and punch you in the face, even in gyms where they are friendly with new folks like my gym was. And many are not, lol. But BJJ is the base for basically all modern mma for a reason - it's super useful to know. It's much more friendly to ease into, rolling does not have the frantic drama and danger that sparring does. I also feel that boxing does not really translate as well to MMA. It's something you have to love, and I fell in love with it but I might have fallen in love with Muay Thai if there had been a good option for coaching - but there was not when I started, and West Portland Boxing had ex-US Olympic coaches and ex-WBA/WBC champions working there, so it was an easy choice.

She rode her first double black at age 11, she does 60+ miles per hour on a set of skis, she rides dirt bikes and she plays center forward for an ECNL soccer team year-round. She's a beast.

Alaska has arguably the worst substance abuse issues in the nation per capita, and Utah thanks to the LDS population has the lowest per capita substance usage. I'm a complete hypocrite here because there is a shelf full of whiskey right behind me but I recently realized that I would like to drink alcohol a lot, lot less than I do currently. I was diagnosed with Crohn's at age 14 and started having symptoms about three years before that. Biologics were many years in the future. I had about 12-feet of diseased small intestines removed in 1982. I was 19 and got down to around 80 lbs. But it gave me 20 good years and by then there were some meds that somewhat worked. I was running a lot of miles (40 or 50 miles/week) in the 2006 to 2010 period. It was a hugely stressful time in my life but I was having very few symptoms. My gastro told me about some research that showed extreme exercise seemed to keep people in remission. I'm not sure that was my case but it is something to keep in mind. Anyway, if your body allows it, do every physical thing you can. It helps on multiple levels.

I have 47 joints that are rated degraded or worse at 33. There is continued evidence for extreme exercise and remission, theory is your immune system gets too busy keeping you alive to eat you. I can't really do that unfortunately. I lift high reps, have a stretching and yoga routine I rotate every morning and doy best to stay busy chasing the kiddos. Too keep the ole heart going I rotate elliptical and cycling 4 times a week. It's pretty frustrating as over use of any joint set just makes things worse so I can't do nearly the volume or types of exercise I actually want too. Oh well!
