I've noticed lately that I have just kinda lost the envelope on if we are bringing in better athletes or not in recruiting. I've kinda gotten to the point where I get excited over a 4 star and just trust Smith. The days of looking at tape and seeing obvious projects don't really exist.
So to get less confused I just went and looked at RB their ratings and P5 offers. List goes from 2018 to present and organized by lowest 247 composite I'd a year has multiple recruits.
Jermar Jefferson - .8619 - 5 P5 (Top in class) Taron Madison - .8759 - 7 P5 Isiah Newell - .8756 - 9 P5 (Top in class) Damir Collins - .8881 - 8 P5 (Top in class) Damien Martinez - .8781 - 3 P5 Brandon Tullis - .8500 - 4 P5 Mahki Frazier - .8544 - 5 P5
Transfers Trey Lowe Deshaun Fenwick Jam Griffen
What did I learn? I have no idea but it's nice to see. Weird note, 2023 is the first year with no frosh (were loaded so makes sense) and 2024 is the first year with multiple freshman.
I did already know this but the number of teams that slept on Martinez is absolutely nuts.

The Athletic re-ranked the classes from 2019 with the BEAVS going #53 to #13.
Only Utah beat them but started higher at 43 to bring it to #12-
The ucks #15 down from #7
Dawgs 15 to 16
Stanford 23 to 20
usc 19 to 25
I have mentioned this before and if it was here I apologize for repeating myself

I have mentioned this before and if it was here I apologize for repeating myself Isn't that like the preseason writer's poll picking Georgia, say #9 in the 2021 preseason poll (I have no idea where they ranked them), and then announcing that they're revising that preseason pol in the middle of January? Or the tout sheets at the race track trying to sell you revised picks when you're leaving, broke, after the 7th race? It's an interesting look back, but 4 years later?

Yeah... talk about trying to get "clicks"! So, in what way are they revamping/judging players? Oh yes, the original ranking was based on zero in person evaluations and pure guess work on how a player would develop and adapt to D1 ball. Each... being such an exact science. 🤣

What they show is what an inexact science recruiting is. Also it shows how well Jonathon's players did that year and the next three as far as starts, all Pac-12, going to the NFL etc. as opposed to all of the teams who ranked higher in the 2019 recruiting class. Only Utah in the P-12 ended the season with a higher ranked class after four years. It was a complement to Beaver coaches and players. Also Stanford was ranked 20 and fell to 23.

It also shows culture and coaching are effective under Smith. Very few of our players came in all conference and ready to get drafted, infact none of them did except maybe Dame but even he started slow. While other programs bring in big stars who transfer out or flame out Smith has created a culture where every player builds the mountain higher.

I don't think the point of the article is to show that those other programs were wrong all along about talent while we (and Utah) were right. Its not like we never offered any of those other guys. It also speaks to player evaluation. Both JS and Wittingham were successful at discerning both raw talent and the character/work ethic that would allow it to develop. How many washouts/transferouts have we had under Smith? I haven't gone down the list but it seems to me we have far fewer than we had under Riley.

I have a feeling that its the character/work eithic/program fit that many upper tier programs miss on.
