On the eve of the draft, Beaver loyalists ponder young Trent Caraway and his coming decision - college or pro?
Caraway had a huge summer and fall in 2022 and carried that forward through the 2023 high school season. Trent has garnered a number of prestigious honors and awards playing on one of the nation's top ranked prep baseball teams at JSerra HS in San Juan Capistrano, CA. This spring, JSerra won their second consecutive CIF-SS championship and again were ranked California's best prep team. Caraway won so many awards, I was reminded of Adley Rutschman winning and dominating every collegiate award imaginable in 2019. The level isn't the same but the picture sure is. This a partial list of Trent's awards.
In the summer and fall, TC has played on three elite travel teams, the Canes National Team, the New York Mets Scout Team, and the Brewers Area Code Team. In the highly competitive environment of travel baseball, he played on 5 national championship teams, made 10 all tournament teams and was MVP in 3 of those national events. In the Area Code games, he made the all tournament team. He was selected to the all showcase group in all 6 events he attended. He also had a sterling performance at the recent MLB pre-draft combine.
This year at JSerra, Tent was a first team selection in the Boros Classic, named the highly competitive Trinity League's MVP, the Orange County Register's all Orange County first team and Player of the Year. He was named to the LA Times All Area team, and was named the CIF-Southern Section's POY. First Team All California by Cal-Hi Sports, and named to Max Preps High School All American Team. He is the California Gatorade Player of the Year. Selected to Rawlings-Perfect Game All American High School Team and is a prep A-A with Prep Baseball Report.
There was one prestigious award that escaped him - The Orange Count Register's "Athlete of the Year". That honor was awarded to a 6'4", 202 pound Wide Receiver that also plays CF and pitches at a high level. Last fall he led his football team to a 13-1 record and the CIF Division semi-finals. He passed for 56 yards on 3 completions in 4 attempts, ran for 226 yards on 25 carries, and had 80 receptions for 1,627 receiving yards and 17 TD's. He totaled 1.909 yards in total offense as a receiver. In baseball, he led his team to a 23-9 record and pitched a 3-0 shutout of Mira Costa in the CIF playoffs before his team lost 2-1 to Sierra Canyon HS. He was selected first team All Empire League and first team All Orange County in both football and baseball. Like Caraway, he is an outstanding student and as his baseball coach, John Weber put it, "the kind of young man you want your daughter to marry".
He played at Cypress HS in the Anaheim S.D. and like Caraway is a member of Oregon State's heralded 2023 recruiting class. His name is Matthew Morrell.
