With the Draft less than 72 hours away, rankings are being shuffled, projections are being tweaked, rumors are circulating and the best and deepest draft pool in 10 years will unfold Sunday afternoon on ESPN. The first round is fairly predictable but the deeper you go into the later rounds, the more difficult (if not impossible) prediction becomes. The Bonus money dwindles and "signability" becomes a bigger factor in those later rounds.
What will be the impact on the Beaver baseball program? Last year saw a run on nine OSU roster players but only two recruits, transfers Geo Rivera and Jack Noble. This year will be different with only 3 roster players being projected in the draft, but as many as 5 members of our recruiting class are expected to be drafted.
Baseball America’s final projections look like this.
ROSTER PLAYERS:
Garrett Forrester: Cleveland Guardians Rd. 5/ 24th selection. Slot = $371,000.00
Trent Sellers: S.F. Giants Rd. 11/16th selection. Slot = $ 000
Brady Kasper: Milwaukee Brewers Rd. 14/18th selection. Slot = $000
* Forrester and Kasper have one year of eligibility left. Sellers is done.
RECRUITS:
Paul Wilson: Chicago White Sox Rd. 2/12th selection. Slot = $1,659,800.00
Trent Caraway: K.C. Royals Rd. 3/5th selection. Slot = $950,000.00
Eric Segura: Minnesota Twins Rd.6/13th selection. Slot = $322,900.00
Leif Palmer: S.D. Padres Rd. 7/27th selection. Slot = $226,100.00
James DeCremer III: N.Y. Mets Rd.10/22nd selection. Slot = $165,800.00
With four prep pitchers being projected to be drafted in the first half of this 20 round draft, that could be a little concerning. It is interesting to see BA project Wilson being drafted before Caraway, in RPG, PBR and The Athletic’s Keith Law projections, Caraway goes ahead of Wilson. This is Wilson’s best projection - with Perfect Game, Caraway is projected to be to be the final pick of the “A” Competitive balance round – the 39th pick of the first round.
