Let's update a promising young arm in the 2025 OSU recruiting class.
ANDREW VAN COURT RHP/SS 6-2, 186 B/L, T/R WOODLAND, CA. - PIONEER HS
Drew Van Court has completed his first two years of prep competition. He finished his sophomore season with a first team All Golden Empire League selection and earning a place on the D-III All CIF-Sac-San Joaquin Section team. He is Pioneer's starting shortstop when not pitching. Here is a recap of his 2023 performance.
Drew is part of a 3-man starting pitcher rotation and it is a good one. With Van Court headed to Oregon State and Carson Timothy bound for UC-Santa Barbara, Pioneer posted a 23-6 record on the season and was 16-2 in conference play finishing second to cross-town rival, Woodland HS in league play. Woodland is the big Dog in the Golden Empire League and has produced 3 recent first round draft picks with Tony Torcotta, Dustin Pedroia. and Cooper Hjerpe. In the CIF-Section playoffs, Pioneer HS defeated Ponderosa HS 3-1, Patterson HS 4-1, Stockton-Lincoln 3-1 and lost to Ponderosa 2-1 in a Semi-final matchup.
This season in 2023, Drew was 5-2 with an ERA of 2.10 in 36 2/3 IP. He made 10 appearance and 6 starts. He threw 2 no-hitters and had 3 saves. He struck out 49 opposing hitters, while walking 13 with one hit batsmen. Opponents had a .176 BA against him. Playing SS, his slash line was ,348/ .464/ .434. He made 56 plate appearances, and was 16-46 in his official at bats. He drew 9 walks, was hit once and struck out 11 times. He hit 4 doubles, scored 8 runs and had 8 RBI.
As a freshman in 2022, Drew made 8 pitching appearances, started in 4 games and compiled a 3-1 record with a 5.17 ERA. He logged 21 2/3 IP, allowed 23 hits, 16 Runs, with 25 K's and 10 BB. Opponents hit .291 against him. At bat, he played in 20 games, made 46 PA, and was 9-34 in his official AB. His Freshman slash was .265/ .435/ .294.He had 1 double, scored 8 runs and 7 RBI. He struck out 11 times, walked 8 times and was HBP 3 times.
Drew pitches and plays MIF for the powerful Alpha Prime travel team based in Roseville and with a roster made up from northern California's best prep players. AP competes in the biggest regional and national events every summer.
Van Court's metrics indicate a steady 4 pitch arsenal that includes a lively fastball, slider, curve and change. The last trackman data on his fastball show him reaching 85 mph as a freshman at Pioneer and throwing 87-88 with Alpha Prime in the summer of 2022. I don't have anything for this past season at Pioneer but the two no-hit games might indicate there is high gas involved. In '22, his slider was timing out at 79-80, the curve at 75-76 and the change at 76-77. At 16, he has a great frame with length, he's growing and gaining strength - one could assume there is a lot more in the tank.
Rawlings-PG has him ranked #498 nationally and # 58 in California. That should improve with exposure. Prep Baseball Report ranks him nationally at #279 and # 42 in California.
