Is sweating out your recruiting class !
In last year's MLB Draft, we went through a year of angst with Tyler Gough and Gavin Turley. Amazingly. we landed "5-Tool" Gavin, but lost Tyler to the Seattle Mariners and pro ball.
This year, we have had the worry beads out for Trent Caraway and Paul Wilson. Their names are expected to be called on July 9-11 in the MLB Draft in Seattle. Then we wait (and worry) to see if they sign.
Once this year's draft ordeal is over, we can start worrying about the 2024 draft and Zach Swanson from up the road in Toutle Lake, Washington. Swanson is ranked the 25th best prep prospect in the '24 draft by Baseball America.
Beaver baseball is worrisome.

Wondering if someone in the know could give a Cliff's Notes synopsis of what we lose and who we have coming in for the 2024 season regarding recruits. Guess I'm most interested in pitching and how we shape up in this most important position group. Thanks in advance.

Just talking pitchers, we're losing Trent Sellers and Ben Ferrer for sure. Draft eligible guys are Joey Mundt, AJ Lattery, Rhett Larsen, Justin Thorsteinson, Ian Lawson, Jaren Hunter, Braden Boisvert and Ryan Brown. Lattery, Brown, Lawson are gone. Maybe randomly one or two guys of the other guys comes back, but I wouldn't count on it. Maybe Hunter because of the injury? We are still, as far as I know, bringing in Noah Ferguson, a grad transfer from PLU. Big arm, 94-95, had a lot of success at that lower level. Seems like every year we get a surprise, so maybe there's more to come with transfers. So, the incoming class. It's possibly the best class we've ever had for pitching, on paper at least. Paul Wilson, LHP - Was up to touching 97 for a while, slipped back to Earth a little, but he still throws gas with a wipeout curve. Friday night guy immediately if he comes to campus. Very concerned about that. But the velo drop could be a concern to MLB? He'll be at all the big camps, so we'll find out soon enough. Eric Segura, RHP - Live arm and a really good pitcher. Reminds me of Fehmel with a 92 MPH fastball. I think he's an absolute stud. Weekend starter if he gets here. I think he will. James DeCremer III, RHP - Throws GAS, lots going on with his delivery, maybe command issues, so some scouts think he's more of a reliever than a starter. I think he comes here to prove he can start. I think he could be in the rotation very early. Laif Palmer, RHP - Tall, big arm, up to 95 and improving, good offspeed pitches, sweeping slider, hard change, projectable, sizable risk he doesn't come here. If he does, he'll really improve his draft stock. Starter quickly. Drew Talavs, RHP - Not overwhelming, sitting at maybe 89 mph with a tight breaking ball and he knows how to pitch. Good athlete, could probably put on some weight. Looks like he'll be pretty good. Haven't been able to see a ton of tape on him though. Dain Lais, RHP - Big kid, 6'3", throws throws 91-92 now, could be quite a bit more upside. Allegedly climbing the draft boards. Good breaking ball he can throw a couple different ways, good changeup. Matthew Morrell, RHP - Another big guy, 6'4", throws about 93 last time I saw tape, fantastic athlete - also a 3 star WR, command may be an issue from what I saw. Bryce Johnson, RHP - Big kid again, 6'3", 230ish. Fastball maybe up to 91, big slow breaking ball, good command. Haven't seen a ton of tape on him to be honest. Spencer Green, RHP - Tall, thin, decent fastball, 88-89, I think he has more in the tank, very projectable, off speed needs work in my mind. But the only tape I've seen is older.
Easton Corey, RHP - I haven't seen any new tape, so I can't say much.
-- Just my opinions. But, we've got some good dudes coming in, assuming they get on campus. So many of these guys are playing summer ball in the area, it'll be cool to see them go against better competition than HS kids.

What is interesting is... if 5 pitchers are gone...
We are anticipating 1 transfer, and possibly 10, but lets say realistically 8 freshman.... that is 4 other roster spots lost somehow to bring all the new guys into the roster.
Sure, some may Redshirt due to injury or not make the roster but the math is heavy toward others not making the roster if all of these newbies are in fact better.
Baseball is a tough way to go and lots of kids lose there spot or transfer out as they see the writing on the wall. So, if by chance we start seeing kids jump into the portal... remember this post and we can all guess that everyone is looking at the numbers and trying to find a place to play.
I for one, think we need to reload at pitching and I'm excited by this group of recruits. As we have seen, you need an Army of pitchers to make it through a season!
Go BEAVS!

What about Bridger Holmes…pitcher who is Tom Holmes son. ah, I knew I left somebody out. (Although I believe his dad actually isn't Tommy or his brother, but played football at Oregon in sort of the same era). I'll try to find some video on him.

According to this: futurestarsseries.com/mlb-draft-2023-the-top-600-prospects/Only 3 of these guys are in the top 600 draft prospects. And really only Paul Wilson is probably not coming to Corvallis: Paul Wilson -- Ranked #54 draft prospect (2nd round) Laif Palmer -- Ranked #228 draft prospect (7th round) Spencer Green -- Ranked #581 draft prospect (19th round)

Lattery was our #2 starter by the end Wouldn't surprise me if he came back looking to be in the starting rotation permanently As mentioned above about roster crunch, several guys have already jumped in the portal: Victor Quinn David Grewe Justin Thorsteinson Braden Boisvert TJ Wheeler Ely Kennel Isaiah Burke None of them are overly surprising and I wish them all great luck and success. Too bad Quinn could never quite harness that 97 mph fastball.

The incoming class includes two transfers, Noah Ferguson from Pacific Lutheran who Cake mentioned and Chase Reynolds from LBCC. Ferguson was here this year but was injured.
I don't believe Spencer Green from Richland, WA. HS will be a member of this class.
Cake has done a nice job covering the 9 prep pitchers we have scheduled in this fall.

Interesting tidbit from Baseball America last summer. "Of the last 22 Cy Young Awards, 16 were won by pitchers who went to four-year colleges. That includes multiple-time Cy Young winners Verlander, Scherzer, deGrom and Corey Kluber. The only Cy Young Award winners in that time not drafted out of college were almost all lefthanders—Clayton Kershaw (x3), Blake Snell and Robbie Ray. Rick Porcello is the only high school righthander to have won a Cy Young Award in that time frame." Go to college young man

Weak programs don't have to worry about recruits being taken in the draft.

What about Bridger Holmes…pitcher who is Tom Holmes son. So, I found his game pitching for the Springfield Drifters vs the Port Angeles Lefties. Here's my take.
RHP, big kid, maybe 6'4", 220#, very athletic, works fast, looks composed on the mound. Very low arm slot, basically sidearm. Not quite a Hjerpe style cross fire delivery, but it's close. Looks very deceptive.
Not a super-overwhelming fastball, 90-92, pretty typical from that low slot, but it's got a lot of run, so the fastball plays up. Wipeout slider. Big, slow frisbee, 75 MPH. Massive break on it, devastating against right handers.
The issue would be command. It's a little raw. He walked a bunch of guys in JUCO, hit 3 batters in the game I watched, threw a couple behind right handed batters. But there's nothing in his delivery that doesn't look correctable. And it's more the fastball, seems to land the slider a lot more often.
I kind of hate to make a comparison like this, but if he figures out the command deal, he looks a lot like a right handed Hjerpe.
In two starts, he's gone 9 2/3, 15 strikeouts, 6 walks. Opponents hitting .222 against him, only 1 well hit ball in the one game I watched.
So yeah, looks pretty good.
