OSU has a rich history in TnF. Is it a Title IX issue? Funding? Facilities? Just curious as to 'why' I'd take TnF over Wrestling especially since there are what 3 of 12 schools with wrestling programs? It is a Title 9 issue. We’d have to add another Women’s sport to bring back men’s track. Also, the wrestling program is fully endowed and that is probably the only reason that we still have it. So, yes $$ and Title 9 are the issues.

And mostly, to tell the truth not many have missed it since we dropped it after the 1988 season. Fund-raising efforts to restore it got nowhere.

Had a dorm friend who aiming for making the Olympics and was pissed when OSU announced that TnF would be cut. As young man new to OSU, I felt bad for him, but didn’t care much about running. I suppose he transferred to Oregon or something.
Bureaucrats making decisions in rooms never see the people and the lives they affect.

Back when I was last a Beaver student in 1972 I was told that the Beavers had more individual national champions in men's track and field than any other school. Does that sound right?
I know that was a long, long time ago, but in the 1960s men's track and field was as thrilling as any Beaver sport. They were just as strong as the school down the road. I remember sitting in the stands in Hayward and thrilling as the Beavers came around the bend sweeping the 220 (or was it the 200 meters by then?) and beating the Ducks in a dual meet. There was a second place finish at nationals in there.
Tim Vollmer, Willie Turner, Ernie Smith, Dennis Phillips, Pat Collins, Charlie Olds, Steve Kelly, John Radetich, and of course Fosbury. I'm sure I'm forgetting some great ones as I think off the top of my head. A Saturday at a dual meet was a great sports day.

Whoever told you OSU had more individual T&F championships than any other school was, to be kind, misinformed. It’s hard to find numbers for OSU but I’d bet the farm, the kids and my soul that it is and was way, way below USC’s championship total (28 team, 126 men’s individual outdoor champions to date). BTW, you missed listing 1972 NCAA high jump champion Tom Woods, the pride of Estacada. OSU’s Men’s Outdoor T&F Individual Champions 200M 1970 Willie Turner 400M 1979, 1982 Kasheef Hassan 800M 1963 Norm Hoffman 1500M/Mile 1963, 1964 Morgan Groth 3000M Steeplechase 1988 Karl Van Calcar High Jump 1959 Wayne Moss 1968, 1969 Dick Fosbury 1972 Tom Woods Pole Vault 1952 Lyle Dickey 1974 Ed Lipscomb Hammer Throw 1969, 1970 Steve deAutremont Javelin 1974 Jim Judd fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/track_outdoor_champs_records/2012-13/2012_d1_motf.pdf(FWIW, OSU wrestling has won 12 individual NCAA championships. While that is fewer than T&F’s 16, that’s also in 10 wrestling weight classes vs 21 events in T&F)

Great information. Thanks so much. It's nice to have actual data rather than sometimes inflated memories. I also checked my note that the Beavers had a second place national finish, which was actually a third place in 1969 (or 68, I don't want to go back to look it up again).
I thought of Steve deAutremont the next day and am pleased to see his back-to-back championships on the list. I believe he was from Eugene--making it all the sweeter. I just checked that fact and, yes, he graduated from St. Francis High School in Eugene. I was also sad to see that he passed away two years ago.
But the spirit of the point remains the same. The Beavers had some GREAT track and field teams, especially in the late 60s, early 70s.
