There was talk during this past season regarding player development, or the lack there of. With the Beavs having a losing season, player development became a concern even though the team only returned 4 players, one had been a walk-on while another was obviously battling a year long injury. There’s also been numerous post thru the years regarding the ‘Kolbe leap’. I became curious so I did some research of statistical growth of players during the Rueck years. I found the research enlightening, but I never took time to put the information together in a coherent form. I still haven’t!! I doubt I ever will, so I’m just going to throw it out there in the mess that it is. I mentioned in another thread about players whose stats remained close to the same each year of their career. Not all players show statistical growth. In this post I want to refer to players who had definite statistical growth while at Oregon State. I felt this should be particularly interesting in light of the young players on the current team. I’ll add individual post to this thread so this original post won’t be overly long.

As I did my research, I was very curious about the “Kolbe leap”. We’ve talked about it so much on this board, that I was a little surprised that Kolbe wasn’t the only person who had a leap in the 2016/2017 season. In 2013/2014 Bre Brown played 8mpg while Kolbe Orum averaged 5.6mpg. The next season Brown was out with an injury, and Orum averaged 7.7mpg. In 2015/2016 Brown averaged 5.5mpg and 2.2ppg while Orum averaged 7.2mpg and 2.3ppg. It was 2016/2017 when both players saw a leap in playing time. Brown played 21.7mpg and averaged 7.8ppg and 5.8rpg. Orum averaged 22.8mpg and 6.7ppg and 5.1rpg. The Bre and Kolbe leap was very noticeable, and something that is talked about until this day on Beaver boards.

Jamie Weisner came to the Beavs with obvious talent from the start. Both her freshman and sophomore years she averaged 12.5ppg and shot near .400 from the floor (.408 as a freshman and .394 as a sophomore) She had clear statistical improvement her Junior and Senior seasons, averaging 13.7ppg her junior season and 17.3ppg her senior season while shooting .481 and .480 respectively. Jamie had constant increases in her 3pt shooting going from .372 as a freshman to .399 to .420 to .443 as a Senior. Jamie also increased her free throw attempts from 73 and 70 her first two seasons to 86 as a Junior and 127 as a senior. While Jamie’s Freshman and Sophomore seasons were very good, she went on to have one of the best Senior seasons by a Beav earning Pac12 POY award and leading the team to the final four.

As a sophomore her minutes increased to 15.1mpg, and her ppg and rpg went to 4.1ppg and 3.9rpg. As a junior, Marie jumped into a starting role. Her minutes increased to 28.4mpg and she averaged 9.9ppg and 8.1rpg. As a Senior, Marie also had one of the better years a Beaver player has ever had. Marie carried the Beavs to many wins as a Senior and led the Beavs into the final 8 in the NCAA tournament.

Agreed. These career recaps are great during the off season. Thanks!
Hopefully in the future we'll be looking back at Beers and TVO in the same light. They have that kind of potential, IMO.
