Oregon State's nonconference opponents:
New Mexico
New Mexico has clinched 5th-place in the Mountain West. Only the top four teams qualify for the Mountain West Tournament, so the Lobos' season ends this weekend.
Minnesota
Minnesota currently sits in 10th-place in the 13-team Big Ten and can finish no lower than 10th. Only the top eight teams qualify for the Big Ten Tournament, though. In order to qualify as the last team in, Minnesota must beat Rutgers twice, Indiana must beat Michigan State twice, and Nebraska must beat Purdue. That would set up a three-way tie between Michigan State, Minnesota, and Purdue. Minnesota owns the tiebreaker in that situation, which, oddly enough, is best record against Rutgers. Minnesota, with the sweep of Rutgers, would have the best record of those three teams.
UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Barbara currently sits in second place in the Big West with the tiebreaker over UC San Diego and with the highest RPI of any team in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton is currently in first in the standings. Santa Barbara would have to win two more games than Fullerton or hope for a multiple-team tie to win the Big West. Having said all of that, we should root for Cal Poly over UC Santa Barbara, because it will help Oregon State's RPI more.
Coppin State
Coppin State currently sits in seventh place in the 11-team Northeast Conference. Only the top six teams qualify for the Northeast Conference Tournament. Coppin State would need to win its regular season finale, have Sacred heart beat Merrimack twice, and have Delaware State beat Maryland Eastern Shore at least once. That would leave Coppin State and Merrimack tied, Coppin State with the tiebreaker.
Cal Poly
Cal Poly currently sits in eighth in the 11-team Big West Conference. Cal Poly finishes the season against the two best teams in the Big West in UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton. Cal Poly has no hopes of finishing at the top of the Big West. Cal Poly has clinched their worst season since at least 2010 but would need to finish at least 5-1 to match their 2010 campaign. If they finish 4-2 or worse, Cal Poly will have clinched their worst season since 1999, but, again, Cal Poly would need to go at least 3-3 to match 1999. If Cal Poly goes 2-4 or worse, Cal Poly will have logged their worst season since 1998.
San Diego
San Diego's regular season is over. San Diego has an open weekend and is not playing anyone. San Diego is currently in third place in the 10-team West Coast Conference. San Diego can pass Portland, if Portland loses the final two at San Francisco (not good for Oregon State). The top two teams in the West Coast Conference get a bye on Wednesday and do not have to start play until Thursday. In order to win the two seed, San Diego would both need Portland to lose the final two at San Francisco but would also need Gonzaga to beat Santa Clara at least once.
Nevada
Nevada currently is in the cellar of the seven-team Mountain West. Nevada would have to win at least one more game than UNLV to overtake UNLV into sixth. Only the top four teams play in the Mountain West Tournament, so Nevada's season ends tomorrow.
Portland
Portland currently sits in second in the 10-team West Coast Conference. Portland would clinch the two-seed and a bye in the West Coast Conference Tournament with at least one win at San Francisco. San Diego would pass Portland, if San Francisco beats Portland twice. Santa Clara also could possibly pass Portland with two wins and two San Francisco wins over Portland.
Seattle
Seattle currently sits in 4th-place in the 13-team WAC. Seattle has already clinched a spot in the eight-team WAC Tournament. It is important to finish in the top four of the WAC Tournament, because the top four teams get a bye. Seattle controls its own destiny and is up a game on UTA with the tiebreaker. However, any loss opens the door to California Baptist passing Seattle into fourth place.
Gonzaga
Gonzaga currently sits in 5th-place in the 10-team West Coast Conference. Gonzaga will finish somewhere between a four- and six-seed in the West Coast Conference Tournament.
Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon currently sits in 2nd-place in the 13-team WAC. Grand Canyon has clinched at least the two-seed. Grand Canyon can clinch the top-seed with two wins and a Tarleton State win over Sam Houston State.

Western Carolina will open the Southern Conference Tournament against the loser of tomorrow's UNCG @ East Tennessee State game.

Seems like this got off to a wrong start in mid-February in Surprise. I have no idea who will be in Surprise in 2024, but I hope it 'improves'.
The other 3 teams that were in Surprise in 2023 are currently 2nd, 5th and 10th in their respective Leagues. If instead, the other 3 teams in Surprise included TWO (rather than ONE) conference stalwarts, that would be a far better start. Not to mention better viewing from a fans perspective. For instance, Nebraska instead of Minnesota from the Big Ten (as an aside, I LOVE the Nebraska fans that have come come to Surprise)....or maybe San Jose State instead of New Mexico from the Mountain West.
I admit that I'm using currently informed hindsight with these suggestions.....But Surprise, with two out of three of lower tier team opponents, followed by Coppin State in Corvallis, put the Beavs in an RPI hole, even after finishing those first 7 games at 6-1.

The World Baseball Classic did not help the situation. But Oregon State could have jumped in that Grand Canyon mini-tournament in Phoenix and put the Beavs in a better current position. Also, two games against UC Santa Barbara, as opposed to two games against New Mexico would have tremendously helped the situation. When opponents' records are half of the ranking, you have to be a little more discerning.

Portland finished second in the West Coast Conference, San Diego finished fourth, and Gonzaga finished sixth. Gonzaga kicks off the West Coast Conference Tournament on Wednesday against Santa Clara, and San Diego plays against Saint Mary's. If Gonzaga wins, they play Loyola Marymount on Thursday, and the Saint Mary's and San Diego winner would play Portland. If Santa Clara wins, they play Portland, and the Saint Mary's and San Diego winner would play Loyola Marymount. Hopefully Gonzaga plays Portland and San Diego plays Loyola Marymount. The final opponent is Western Carolina, which plays defending champion UNCG on Wednesday. If Western Carolina wins, they play Wofford on Thursday. Otherwise, it is complicated.

Oregon State's nonconference opponents: New Mexico New Mexico has clinched 5th-place in the Mountain West. Only the top four teams qualify for the Mountain West Tournament, so the Lobos' season ends this weekend. Minnesota Minnesota currently sits in 10th-place in the 13-team Big Ten and can finish no lower than 10th. UC Santa Barbara UC Santa Barbara currently sits in second place in the Big West with the tiebreaker over UC San Diego and with the highest RPI of any team in the Big West. Coppin State Coppin State currently sits in seventh place in the 11-team Northeast Conference. Cal Poly Cal Poly currently sits in eighth in the 11-team Big West Conference. San Diego San Diego's regular season is over. Nevada Nevada currently is in the cellar of the seven-team Mountain West. Nevada would have to win at least one more game than UNLV to overtake UNLV into sixth. Only the top four teams play in the Mountain West Tournament, so Nevada's season ends tomorrow. Portland Portland currently sits in second in the 10-team West Coast Conference. Seattle Seattle currently sits in 4th-place in the 13-team WAC. Gonzaga Gonzaga currently sits in 5th-place in the 10-team West Coast Conference. Gonzaga will finish somewhere between a four- and six-seed in the West Coast Conference Tournament. Grand Canyon Grand Canyon currently sits in 2nd-place in the 13-team WAC. Grand Canyon has clinched at least the two-seed. Grand Canyon can clinch the top-seed with two wins and a Tarleton State win over Sam Houston State. Santa Barbara beat Cal Poly in the first two games this weekend. That clinches Cal Poly their worst season since 1999. And Cal Poly needs to go 3-1 over their final four to make that true. 2-2 or worse would mean that Cal Poly just had their worst season since 1998. Cal Poly is up 9-3 on Santa Barbara in the ninth, trying to salvage what can be salvaged for Oregon State's RPI. Santa Barbara is basically Cal Poly's biggest rival, a mere 96 miles away from San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly @ Santa Barbara is the final game today. UC San Diego is currently sitting atop the Big West with Santa Barbara in second. If the score holds up, Santa Barbara would have to sweep to win the Big West Championship. Fullerton has the tiebreaker over Santa Barbara for second, unless both sweep. Cal Poly would stay eighth with a win. Fullerton comes to San Luis Obispo next weekend. Santa Barbara heads to Honolulu.

Minnesota rallied from a 6-1 seventh inning deficit to win 8-7. However, Michigan State beat Indiana (second in the Big Ten) for the second straight game to eliminate Minnesota. The Gophers' season ends tomorrow. The final spot in the Big Ten comes down to Illinois and Purdue. In order to make the Big Ten Tournament, Purdue needs to beat Nebraska and have Indiana beat Michigan State. Any other result results in Illinois making the Tournament. Santa Barbara beat Cal Poly to continue to wreck Oregon State's RPI. Santa Barbara tied Fullerton atop the Big West, but Fullerton continues to have the tiebreaker. Sacred Heart beat Merrimack twice to provide Coppin State with most of the help that Coppin State needed. Only the top six teams qualify for the Northeast Conference Tournament. Coppin State would need to win its regular season finale and have Delaware State beat Maryland Eastern Shore at least once. That would leave Coppin State and Merrimack tied, Coppin State with the tiebreaker. Maryland Eastern Shore needs to win and have Coppin State win, as well. Otherwise, Merrimack finishes sixth in the Northeast Conference. Portland won to clinch the two-seed in the West Coast Conference Tournament. Santa Clara beat Gonzaga. If Santa Clara beats Gonzaga again, Santa Clara finishes third, and San Diego finishes fourth. Gonzaga and Santa Clara are tied together and will play each other in the first round of the West Coast Conference Tournament either as the four and five seeds or the three and six seeds. In much the same way, Saint Mary's and San Diego are tied together regardless of seed. Grand Canyon defeated California Baptist. Grand Canyon must beat California Baptist tomorrow and Tarleton State must defeat Sam Houston State. Otherwise, Grand Canyon will be the two-seed. Seattle defeated Abilene Christian. Seattle's magic number for the three-seed is one. Seattle clinches third with a win or one or two UTA wins over Utah Valley tomorrow. In either instance, Seattle can finish no worse than fourth. Six opponents made conference Tournaments: Grand Canyon won the WAC Regular Season Championship. Seattle finished fourth. Seattle starts off the WAC Tournament on Wednesday morning. Grand Canyon will play California Baptist, if California Baptist wins. Otherwise, Grand Canyon will play the winner of UTA and UTRGV in the last game on Wednesday. Seattle doing Oregon State no favors, dropping the Tournament opener to Utah valley 16-6 in eight innings. They play the California Baptist @ UT Arlington winner at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Grand Canyon plays against UTRGV tonight at seven. All games are in Mesa. Santa Clara beating Gonzaga 3-1 in the eighth in the first game in the West Coast Conference Tournament. Gonzaga needs to turn it around and win that game. If Gonzaga wins, they play Loyola Marymount. Otherwise, Gonzaga's season is over. All games are in Las Vegas. Western Carolina is tied 0-0 with defending Champion UNCG in the third inning in the Southern Conference Tournament. The winner of that games plays Wofford. The loser goes home. All games in Greenville, South Carolina.

Portland needs to beat Santa Clara twice to win the West Coast Conference Championship and play their way into the Tournament.
