Why are we playing western Carolina? Are they the sacrificial lambs for tournament bound D1 teams? The Athletic Director at Western Carolina is Alex Gary, who was a baseball player at Western Carolina. He worked in fundraising at Oregon State from 2017 and 2020, and I hear that he has great ties with Oregon State's current athletic department. That is why I think that Oregon State scheduled Western Carolina. The list of teams that could be chosen include, but are not limited to: Baylor, Cal State Bakersfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Fresno, Hartford, Illinois, McNeese, Miami (Ohio), Saint Mary's, Saint Peter's, San Diego, Tennessee-Martin, UMBC, VMI, and Western Carolina. Illinois would have been an excellent choice for several reasons.

As has been said here numerous time, the #2 in WCU's department is Kyle Pifer, who worked for many years in the OSU compliance department. He and his family are out here this weekend.
Illinois is home with UT-Martin this weekend. It's complete folly to think they'd eschew a home series for a West Coast road trip five days before the Big Ten tournament.

Tough to find someone to play here, who also had a bye week at the end of season We will never know why, or who was approached & their response. But, early on someone posted multiple other teams that fit our bye weekend. Canham addressed it in the pregame interview yesterday. Essentially, no one wanted to come to Corvallis the week before conference tournaments. And we certainly didn’t want to go on the road either. Drawing the final bye week is very a much a short straw situation.
