Who wears the slugging crown on this year's Beaver team? Using some simple analytics, we can draw some conclusions. This is an array of metrics that are directly or closely related to slugging prowess and provide a rudimentary look at OSU power at the plate. Since it appears we have settled on a starting lineup we will finish the season with, Coach Canham has stacked our six most productive power hitters sequentially in the batting order. Combined, they have hit 48 of the team's 66 home runs this season. Our stats will focus on these six players.
A. We start with the bread and butter calculation of SLG. Slugging % is part of the three component slash line that quickly identifies offensive proficiency. Bazzana .650 Guerra .547 McDowell .511 Kasper .500 Forrester .484 Kane .446
B. mSLG (Modified SLG %) A variation of SLG that weights XBH, includes BB+HBP and SAC in the calculation. Bazzana .519 Guerra .476 Kasper .422 Forrester .414 Kane .405 McDowell .352
C. ISO (Isolated SLG). Here we subtract Batting Average from Slugging % to isolate power. Bazzana .269 Guerra .240 Kasper .211 Kane .183 McDowell .163 Forrester .156
D. TB/O (Total bases/out). Total bases divided by outs identifies TB expectancy per AB. Bazzana 1.49 Guerra .791 McDowell .783 Forrester .721 Kasper .703 Kane .605

One year did a lot of good for Bazzana. He grew in leaps and bounds. McDowell also was a very nice and much needed surprise.
I can't wait to see what another year does for the likes of Kane and Turley. Turley will be a terror on the base paths when he finally matures as a hitter. And Guerra might really challenge the HR record if he gets going.
It's good to be a Beaver.

HE WENT BANANAS !
Travis Bazzana, 2B, Oregon State Class: 2024 What He Did: 10-for-19 (.526), 3 HR, 2 2B, 9 R, 11 RBIs
Bazzana went bananas last week, with three multi-hit games, and he capped off a four-game week with a 5-for-7 game against UCLA, where he hit his ninth home run of the season. Bazzana has improved in most offensive categories this spring and is slashing .381/.510/.639 with a 19.9% walk rate and 15.5% strikeout rate. His 33 stolen bases are also tied for eighth among Division I hitters.
