I was in Arizona and watched two of the games with ASU. Our pitching staff got shelled in all three games. Hitting and defense made all the games close. Arizona beat ASU 20-0 in their midweek game.
Arizona is far and away the top hitting team in the conference yet our pitching shut them down.
I am trying to make sense of this. If someone can explain it to me I would appreciate it.

Something about those ASU games stinks on ice. Not just my opinion.

It’s a goddamn diabolical conspiracy, I tell ya! The “deeeeeep state” is phookin around with our staff. Probably some mind-altering electro-magnetic pulsations, rendering our boys HELPLESS “agin” it’s powers. It’s a miracle they didn’t piss themselves too. 😬

What our pitchers did to Arizona last night was business as usual. Our pitchers have been quelling opponent’s bats all season. ASU, so far, has been the outlier. And truth be told, we may never know why or even if there is a cause other than bad luck. Let it go. We could have taken the series if we had had one or two more timely hits. The boys need to learn from it and move on.

Somebody inject Turley with whatever has Peterson swinging the Bat. That kid goes up there to hit the damn ball.

Sellers is wilder than a March Hare. I think that was baffling to the UA hitters, maybe even a bit intimidating. If Trent could ever get his upper body in sync with his lower body and vice versa, he might be unhittable. Can you imagine how good he might be if he could get command of that breaking ball?
Rushing and over-throwing is a recipe for disaster, hanging that thing up in the zone or throwing it over Weber's head will lead to 100 pitch counts and a lofty ERA in a hurry. Getting his motion under control would move Trent way up the draft boards in July.

Could it be that the strike zone is slightly different for our staff in Tempe than it is in Corvallis?

When Sellers can hit is breaking ball he is really good. He seems to always be wild high. I wonder at the lower level if he was routinely able to blow the high balls past the hitters. He just waste too many pitches.

He just waste too many pitches. I agree with this statement. Lattery has some of that Sellers stuff going on as well, every time you turn around they're in a 2-2 or 3-2 count on a hitter. I like both of them, they have good stuff, but just wish they were a "little" more efficient with their pitches.

His weird slider pitch is something else.

Pitched balls have less break in high temperature and low humidity. Batted balls have less break as well, tending to travel further faster. Guys with heaters will throw faster and straighter fastballs in high temperature and low humidity. But garbage ball pitchers, which try and hit spots around the strike zone are not going to be as effective. Plus, if any hitter gets ahold of one, it will travel further, faster, or both. As I have previously demonstrated with statistics, Arizona is tough to play in after mid-April.
