The Beavers went south with their recent thunder and stellar pitching and engaged in a shootout at the OK Corral (Phoenix Muni). When the smoke had cleared, ASU was left standing but there was bullpen carnage scattered everywhere - offensive fireworks seldom seen in these parts, I reckon. In a 3 game series, OSU-ASA produced 70 hits, 52 passes (44 BB+HB), 8 ROE and 64 runs scored. For the series, ASU hit .327 (36-110) and the Beavs , .296.(34-115).
Comparatively for the series, OSU drew 26 BB+HB, ASU drew 18. ASU had 5 big innings (4 runs or more), OSU had 4. The Beavers hit 9 Home Runs, ASU hit 7. Two revealing stats were LOB and K's. The Beavers left 34 runners stranded, ASU left 20. OSU struck out 34 times, ASU had 19 K's. As impressive as it was, OSU's offense could have capitalized on even more scoring opportunities by reducing the strike outs with some timely contact with runners on base and in scoring position.
This was a fascinating series, with both teams knocking the cover off the ball and both pitching staffs getting rocked. At times I thought there were flashes of our youth and inexperience showing up but that is to be expected with only 3 returning starters in your lineup. Certainly, lessons being learned for the coming years ….. our youngsters learned the nuances of playing in overcast, damp and 40's weather one day to playing two days later in 95 degree heat and thin air.
Yesterday, the Beavs offense kept rolling with a 13-2 win at GCU. For the four day journey through the Valley of the Sun, Oregon State rapped out 52 hits, scored 43 runs, hit 11 Dingers, and stole 13 bases. Our 4 day batting average was .327. A very nice improvement while adding 2 challenging road wins to our record.
Our team ERA went from 3.14 to 3.76 following the ASU series. That will come down if the “arms” listen to their coach. "Throw strikes, get ahead and stay down". Our staff spent way too much time upstairs in the ASU series.
Looking towards our bullpen for atonement in the upcoming Arizona series
