We had a tough time with ASU in 2007 until we met the Sun Devils in Omaha. The rumor is Pat Murphy helped us get into the tournament. "Thanks, Murph" Oregon State beat Arizona State 12-4 in Surprise in 2007 in a nonconference game and then got swept at Goss. That win in Surprise probably got the Beavers into the Tournament. A loss probably would have been fatal to Oregon State's chances. Oregon State had upset their pitching rotation to win the Charlottesville Regional and continued that into the Corvallis Super Regional and College World Series. The result was that Oregon State's third starter (Reyes) started against Fullerton and Oregon State's ace, Stutes went against Arizona State. The Devils threw their third starter, Flores, for unknown reasons to go up against the Beavs' ace. Four of the first five Beavs (Hopkins, Barney, Lissman, and Ogata) singled to put Oregon State up 2-0. Stutes mowed down the first four hitters before getting into trouble with an HBP and two singles to cut the lead to 2-1. The Devils pulled Flores in favor of their second starter, Satow. Satow got the first two Beavers and then gave up single, double, walk, and Lissman homer. 6-1. Stutes did not allow a hit into the seventh. Oregon State scored single runs in the next three innings and then tacked on three more, two unearned to go up 12-1. Stutes ran out of gas at the end of six but pitched into the seventh. Once the Devils got into the Beaver bullpen, things started to go sideways. Arizona State scored five runs over the final three innings, but the Beaver bullpen was able to strand runners at the corners in the seventh and the bases loaded in the ninth. Oregon State held on for a 12-6 win. Arizona State "swept" Oregon State in 2007 but later vacated all three of those wins. Like I said: "Thanks Murph" The 2007 team unlike every other OSU team that reached Omaha in the "Casey Era" had only one tough game. Game 1 against Fullerton was a "Near Run Thing" after that it was "Boat Race" time.

Game 1 against Fullerton was a "Near Run Thing" after that it was "Boat Race" time. 2007 Oregon State is still the only team to win four games by more than five runs in Omaha ever. In that way, it is unlike every other team in Omaha.......ever, Casey Era or not. The real drama was in the Charlottesville Regional. Oregon State had to come back in three of the four wins and only lost once in 13 innings. The only game that Oregon State did not fall behind was the second Rutgers game, and that was only because of the Santschi-to-Lennerton-to-Canham relay to gun down the leadoff hitter at the plate to end the first inning. Rutgers put at least two runners on in every inning but one from the third to the eighth but could only manage two runs out of that. Oregon State overcame a 3-0 sixth inning deficit and 3-1 eighth inning deficit, the final three runs against one of Virginia's best relievers in Michael Schwimer. Darwin Barney robbed Sean Doolittle of a base hit with an "phenomenal" (Pat Casey's word) run and diving catch into shallow center and Joe Paterson did not allow another runner to reach in a 5-3 win. Oregon State fell behind 3-2 in the second in the Championship Game but scored three to retake the lead. Virginia had runners on the corners and runners on second and third in the fourth and fifth innings but did not score a run. Ogata hit a two run base hit to run the lead up to 7-3. Virginia immediately loaded the bases, but Joe Paterson induced Doolittle to fly out and then induced an inning-ending double play to preserve the four-run lead. The Cavs did not really threaten thereafter.
