I had a colleague that graduated from RPI (Renssellaer Polytechnic Institute), near Albany, NY. They are D1 in hockey and D3 in everything else. Intramural hockey is a big deal and they have several levels. He said he played the lowest level, tripod. I didn't understand that but he said imagine someone who can't skate and they use the stick for balance, in effect, becoming a tripod.
