A little slow on the recruiting board, so this might be a good time to discuss the new NCAA baseball recruiting rules. This model will seriously impact college recruiting, but most coaches (60%) favor the new rules. The change came about because of increased concerns over recruiting 7th and 8th graders. College coaches with Ray guns and taking notes at 13u tournament games was becoming common place. As one coach put it, “Great, I won’t have to talk to 14 year olds anymore”. The new rules will begin on April, 26.
The rules in a nut shell:
Coaches cannot offer or discuss a scholarship before August 1 prior to the athlete’s Junior year of high school. Coaches or anyone representing the University, the player, his family or a third party representative can’t discuss a scholarship or express any player interest . The high school and travel team coaches cannot initiate any contact with the college coaches and vice versa. On 9-1 of the player’s Junior year, he can take visits and have off campus contact with the coach.
The rule is retro-active. Oregon State currently has 15 commitments in the 2024 recruiting class and they are Juniors that will not be impacted by the retro-active rule. OSU also has 13 commits in the 2025 class and they will have to be re-offered on August 1st this coming fall. The 5 commits in the ‘26 class and 2 pledges in 2027 are also subject to the new rules. No offer, no commitment, and no recruiting contact.
High School Junior and Senior prospects/recruits can now take an unlimited number of unofficial and official visits, but only one official visit per school. Previously, the athlete was limited to 5 official visits.
CONCLUSION: More than ever, the baseball camps hosted on campus become important. This is one area the coaches can get to know prospects and develop relationships with the player and his family. The Beaver baseball camps are excellent but look for the hospitality to rachet up in taking advantage of the one opportunity coaches have to interact with a young prospect. The OSU staff will be focused in getting the player on campus and enrolled in a camp. A positive camp experience is a great recruiting tool.
