Oregon State had a bushel of draft picks on the 2022 team and 4 of them are already considered members of their respective organization's Top-30 prospects.
Cooper Hjerpe is rated the 5th best prospect in the St. Louis Cardinal system. The Cardinals are extremely pleased with their first round pick and think there is even more in the tank to develop. The Cardinals want to improve his curve ball and squeeze another 2 mph of velo from his heater. After an extended look at him in Florida, he gets 55 grades on the fastball, change-up and command with a 50 on his slider. The curve gets an average 40 grade. They also plan on fast-tracking him through the system the moment he is ready to take the next step. Cooper is starting out at Advanced A with the Peoria Chiefs in the Midwest League..
Wade Meckler is rated the 23rd best prospect in the Giant's organization. His game and personality are infectious - makeup grade of 60. Wade gets high grades for speed and base running ability (++) and bat control (contact and bunting). The Giants think he can play CF but LF will be his eventual home. Wade's scouting grades are low average for arm strength and power. Those two issues would be the only thing to limit his progress to MLB. Wade is playing with the Eugene Emeralds in the Advanced A Northwest League.
Justin Boyd is the 28th rated prospect in the Cleveland Guardian organization. Organization scouting reports note his linear speed, base running and SB potential. There are concerns over a lack of power making the change to wood bats. His hit tool and arm get high average grades but a lower grade for power. They think his future might be as a 5 position (LF-CF-RF-3B-2B) utility player and have contemplated a move to the infield with him. Justin was a very good SS at Legend HS in Colorado. Justin is playing for the Lynchburg Hillcats in the Class A Carolina League.
Jacob Melton is rated the 4th best prospect in the Houston Astros organization. The Astro's are high on Melton's future and he grades well in 3 important tools, speed, hitting and power. Melton is a gap to gap hitter with good pull and opposite field power. A little unorthodox with the batting stroke but the eye-popping exit velo has the brass excited. He fields well and has decent arm strength. His early career production has impressed the Astros and he should move through the system quickly. Jacob and Rod Gilbert (Tennessee/ former Beaver commit) present a bright future in the Astro outfield. Melton is playing for the Asheville Tourists in the Advanced A South Atlantic League.
