Good question!
That isn't an impressive BA , even for a freshman outfielder. Fortunately that average has been trending up and could improve nicely by season's end, but for now, it is .227. Why is Dallas Macias starting in LF recently? Well, Dallas is determined hitter, has a fast bat, some power, runs in the mid to high 6's in the lazer timed 60's and he is an excellent defender having been a standout SS/RHP at Regis Jesuit HS in the Denver area.
Since offense is about run scoring productivity (batting average is part of the picture), maybe Coach Canham and his learned advisors Barney and Gipson, are looking at two important offensive performance metrics. For comparative purposes on those metrics, I'll use our shining star, Travis Bazzana, a poster boy for glowing analytics in 2023.
First, Dallas leads the team in OBP with a sparkling .485. He finds a way to get on base. A modest sample (16 games and 7 starts), show 33 PA with 5 hits, 6 BB and 5 HBP. He's been a base runner in 16 of his 33 PA's. By comparison, Travis has a lofty OBP of .479
Second, Dallas scores runs when reaching base. In this weekend series, you witnessed his aggresive baserunning - stealing 3rd base following his fence rattling double then evading the tag at home on Talt's sac-fly to RF. He leads the team in scoring frequency when reaching base with a 4.71 PA/Run stat. Travis has a PA/R of 5.03. Scoring frequency can be influenced by several external factors such as player speed, baserunning skill, and who hits ahead of you and behind you, among others. It is a useful but imperfect tool.
In a stretch of the '23 season where the Beavs are in need of offense, Macias has provided some spark by getting a timely hit, 2 singles, 2 doubles and a triple along with 11 free passes, and finding a way to score runs. I would think that's why he's in the lineup.

.227? Thats probly better than half our lineup! There is that...How much time do they give Talt and how low does that BA have to get before they go another direction? When will Mica be able to play in the field to give us more options at DH? Sure hope they give Turley some reps the next two days.
