Short on great players this year, so far. Let's see what a trip to Seattle does for the team.

…Turley saying he didn’t try to change his swing, causing his slump. 34 runs over the first nine games. The last time that Oregon State was held to so few runs in three consecutive conference series? 2017. Oregon State scored a combined 32 runs against Utah, @ Washington, and @ UCLA. Oregon State had 19 hits against California in 2023. Oregon State had 18 hits against UCLA in 2017. The difference? In 2017, Oregon State held Utah, Washington, and UCLA to 24 runs, winning seven of the nine games. In 2023, Oregon State held Wazzu, Stanford, and California to 38 runs. The 14 runs are the difference between the 7-2 record in 2017 and the 3-6 record in 2023. Oregon State was held to 34 runs or fewer in three consecutive conference series in each season from 2010 to 2017 with the exception of 2014.

What's error total vs other seasons? It's gotta be higher.

I don't think it takes a genius to see that Turley seldom (if ever) adjusts his swing to accommodate (for example) a two-strike count, and that he almost always overswings on most of his strikeouts (=most of his at-bats).
Hello Mitch??!! How about providing a little helpful coaching input for the lad?? Remember, this ain't MLB and we don't need a home run from every batting opportunity.

So, a kid with all the tools is not getting any help with is SO problem. Now that sounds just stupid. If he has the kind of talent they are hyping why wouldn't he be getting best available Hitting help? It could mean millions to the guy.

First adjustment to how you are being pitched - move in the box. Forward for junk and to bunt, deep to jump the heat. His feet are on the chalk line of the inside of the box - standing on the plate. Has taken evasive action to avoid HBP on inside called strikes. He gets pitched inside and K's. Tough to handle the pitch in on your hands. Back off and and extend your swing - that won't compromise your plate coverage and might help with a tendency to chase the outside pitch.
If the ball is in your strike zone, swing your bat. Throw the take sign away against a strike thrower. Taking pitches down the gut is not an aggressive hitting posture. Don't need a bunch of .150 hitters up there being "super selective". Nick Madrigal's Father got that message across when he was 10 years old - "put the ball in play and something good might happen".

What's error total vs other seasons? It's gotta be higher. Oregon State has committed 19 errors. At this point last season, Oregon State had committed 11 errors. The Beavers would not hit 19 until May 7, 2022. In 2021, Oregon State was also at 11. The Beavers hit 19 15 days later. 3-5 in those eight games. In 2019, Oregon State was at 20 errors at this point. In 2018, Oregon State was at 23 errors at this point. In 2017, Oregon State was at 24 errors at this point. In 2014, Oregon State was also at 19 errors. In 2013, Oregon State was at 28 errors at this point. In 2007, Oregon State was also at 19 errors. In 2006, Oregon State was at 30 errors at this point. In 2005, Oregon State was at 31 errors at this point. As a reminder, 2021 and 2022 were the best and second-best, respectively, defenses in Oregon State history by fielding percentage. 2018 and 2014 are the third- and fourth-best defenses in Oregon State history. We have been spoiled rotten the past two years defense-wise. This is looking like more of a pre-2021 defense.

I was at the game on Saturday and noted to myself during Turley's pinch hit, that he had moved up in the box. His normal is backfoot on the back line.. but he was more centered in the box during that pinch hit. Let's take these media comments with a grain of salt. You can change your approach and mentality without trying to change your swing mid season.

I think maybe the base running errors, which don't count as errors, and the dead bats make things seem worse than they are. In other words, when we suck on offense, the defensive mistakes stand out more.

But unearned runs were only the difference in the Sunday Wazzu game. In 2022, 4 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Saturday Cal game. In 2021, 9 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Kansas State and Tuesday Santa Clara game. In 2019, 11 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Coastal Carolina, Sunday UCLA, and Friday Cal games. In 2018, 15 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Friday Cal State Fullerton and Thursday Utah games. In 2017, 8 unearned runs. Oregon State was 24-1. The loss was not the result of one of the eight unearned runs. In 2014, 17 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Michigan State and second Nebraska games. In 2013, 21 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Thursday San Diego game. In 2007, 8 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Gonzaga game. In 2006, 23 unearned runs. Unearned runs were not the difference in any baseball game. In 2005, 20 unearned runs. Unearned runs were the difference in the Friday California-Riverside game. Kyle Dernedde's error against Wazzu was the big one in 2023.
