A new and different voice. Bray turned a poor non aggressive defense into the best defense in the Pac 12 with most of the same players. Mostly on the strength of an attitude adjustment. I think the biggest problem is between the ears. When you are at the plate you are on offense, our hitters hit defensively. The attitude is not “what is the pitcher going to do to me” it’s “what I’m going to do to that SOB” A good hitter is an aggressive hitter. Either you are hunting the pitcher or he is hunting you.

Aren't these the same coaches who worked with Boyd, Melton, Meckler, Logan, Bazzana and Forrester on last year's team, which was excellent offensively?

Tim Tibesar was in over his head, though. That had been said loudly by at least me since at least the previous year. Bray, not be an incompetent, was a tremendous upgrade. Does anyone seriously think that Darwin Barney is as bad a hitting coach as Tibesar was a defensive coordinator. I don't.

The best baseball coach I ever played for said the biggest attitude adjustment you can make at the plate is going from 'if this pitch is a strike, I'm going to hit it' to 'I'm going to hit this pitch, unless it's a ball'.
I feel like we could use that adjustment.

Hitting a baseball is juuuusst a bit different than hitting a running back. They say it's the toughest thing to be successful at, consistently, in sports.

The NCAA Rules Committee recently passed the rule of allowing college baseball programs to pay the 3rd Assistant Coach. In August Darwin Barney will join Dorman and Gibson as a fully paid assistant. The committee also held serious discussions on allowing a 4th paid assistant at the discretion of Conference policy and individual school approval.
That initiative has strong support from college Coaches and their Athletic Directors. The proposal was tabled for now but will be taken up again later this year. If that comes to pass, I would love to see Oregon State hire the best hitting instructor available in all of baseball - a Savant of the swing. That would be a great addition to this staff of fine coaches we already have at OSU.

Maybe, we hire a psychologist for that 4th spot.

That's what good hitting coaches do - get inside the head of their pupils.
"Swing Shrinks" if you prefer.
