Oregon State 65 - Loyola Chicago 58
Loyola Chicago entered the game as the nation's best defense. Oregon State's first made basket was at the 13:50 mark of the first half. But Loyola Chicago could only score seven points against the varying defenses that the Beavers threw at them, 7-3. At one point Oregon State was shooting 1/9 with four turnovers and still only down six at 9-3. But the Beavers started to kick it into gear, while the Ramblers missed 11 straight field goals to put Oregon State up 10-9. Loyola Chicago went on a 7-3 run to go up 16-13 with 5:48 left, but the Beavers shut down the Ramblers from there for the rest of the half, building a 24-16 halftime lead. Warith Alatishe hit the final bucket with no time left on the clock. Loyola Chicago's Cameron Krutwig was 3/5 from the field. The rest of the Ramblers were a combined 1/18. 24-16 was the lowest-scoring first half in the entire Tournament.
The teams traded buckets to start the second half, Loyola Chicago pulling within six at 26-20. Oregon State then went on an 11-4 run punctuated by Ethan Thompson's dunk on a Hail Mary pass with 12:49 left in the game, 37-24. Loyola Chicago went on a 20-10 run over the next 9:19 to pull within 47-44 with 3:30 left. A Braden Norris three and Aher Uguak alley-oop were the final five of those points. Lucas hit a jumper, though, and Reichle hit two free throws with 2:43 left to stretch it to seven before Keith Clemons hit a three to pull back within four with 2:24 left. Warith Alatishe hit a layup, but Marquise Kennedy answered with a jumper to pull back within four. Lucas' three with 70 seconds left was a dagger, and Alatishe's two free throws with 48 seconds left all but sealed it.
Oregon State's defense held Loyola Chicago to 33.3% shooting from the field, Loyola Chicago's lowest shooting percentage between February 5, 2020, and January 27, 2022. Ethan Thompson led all scorers with 22 points. Krutwig had 14 points to lead all of Loyola Chicago's scorers. Alatishe finished with his ninth and final double-double as an Oregon State Beaver. Alatishe had a double-double against UCLA, Oregon, and Loyola Chicago, during the six game run to the Elite Eight. Rodrigue Andela finished with two blocks, which would be the most that he would have in a game until the Wake Forest game (he suffered a season-ending injury the next day against Penn State) the following year.
With the win, the Beavs arguably had posted their best season in the past 60 years.
