This may as well go here. The star of the 1970 Emeralds was Joe Lis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Lis Eugene was AAA and in the PCL then. His 1970 season was 36 hr with 324/429/616. He was my favorite player after going to about five games at the old Civic Stadium that summer. Anyway, this year I've spent a lot of time in Tomar, Fatima, and Leira Portugal. The small river in Leira is Rio Lis. When I saw that I knew where Joe's family was from. |

Lane County is where the whale exploded back in 1970 so they do have that local connection ... plus I see in the article they worked with the Florence "who's who" to put their promotion together. |

A "lis" is a fox in both Polish and Czech and is a common surname in both countries for obvious reasons. In the Latin languages, a "lis" is a lily. An example would be the French "fleur-de-lis," which literally means "flower of lily" or "lily flower." The name is much more common in Eastern Europe than in Portugal. In a true Portuguese name, you would expect a "de" to precede the "Lis." If Joe Lis was Portuguese, you would expect his name to be Joe de Lis. A fun fact is that Nazaré is the Portuguese name for Nazareth. |

I didn't know lis is fox in Polish and Czech. You're right, more likely the name is not from Leiria. I'm aware of Nazare. How do you get the accent mark on the "e"?
