"Until you can beat Quinn Matthews, you can't rule the PAC-12 roost."Old Beaver Baseball WisdomSo, we are in Stanford, California (technically the University is not in Palo Alto) with an opportunity to knock our old nemesis, Quinn Matthews out of the box. Matthews cramped our style in 2022, both in the conference series and in the PAC-12 tournament. Matthews is equally adept at starting or relieving and Stanford coach David Esquer uses him in both roles. Last year, Stanford fundamentally reached the CWS by putting Matthews in the bullpen and throwing their number 2 on Friday night and number 3 on Saturday. If Matthews was needed to save a game by going extended innings on either Friday or Saturday, number 4 would start on Sunday. If Matthews didn't come out of the pen on Friday or Saturday, he took the Sunday start. We may not see that strategy this year because he has been the only real effective starter for the Card. Drew Dowd has made 6 appearances, starting 3 games but has been shelled. A 4.61 ERA , a 1.98 WHIP and opposing hitters are batting .306 against him. Nick Dugan has also made 6 appearances with 3 starts. He's been rocked for a 9.00 ERA, 2.23 WHIP, and an opposing batting average of .346 Matthews on the other hand has been superb. He is 3-1, 2.88 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 27 K, 13 BB in 25 innings pitched. He has held opposing hitters to a .202 batting average. Keeping in mind David Esquer is an excellent coach and tactician (he was at Cal as well), I think Stanford will start him on Friday night, knowing the Beavs can pitch and not wanting to get behind by more than a run or two and try playing catch up against the deep Beaver bullpen (Dorman is the biggest "arms merchant" in the PAC) . It will be interesting to see how they use Matthews. It will be an opportunity for OSU to get a little payback from 2022, and a chance to win this series and kick-start their season against a very deep and talented Stanford baseball team.

You seem to have a Jones with Mathews. He’s gm 1. He’s a good pitcher. But got roughed up last year in playoffs a bit. We either get to him, or we don’t. We win, or we don’t.

So Stanford throws 3 pitchers, only one of whom (on paper) is having a good early season.
imho AJ Lattery = a key to OSU pitching in the Stanford series. Admittedly, I've long been a Lattery fan and 2023 shows why.
6 appearances / 11 innings / 11 hits (10 singles, 1 2B) / 1 ER / 3 BB / 15 SO
Hopefully he'll be the #1 choice out of bullpen if any of the 3 OSU starters falter in the first few innings on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. He threw 30 pitches on Tuesday, so he'll be ready. Perhaps that was Canham's / Dorman's thinking in not giving Lattery a mid-week start. That surprised me at first, but it makes sense in hindsight.

Honestly compared to last year the new guys are slam dunks so far. Out side of a really bad start for Larson they have been between good and great. Hutch, Keljo, Larson, Mejia, Jimenez, Sellers and Krieg have all shown they have the goods to compete at this level. Quinn is the only guy who hasn't shown he's got it which is quite a bit better than last year. Grewe, Lawson, Boisvert, and JT all look like they have taken a step. Kmatz, Hunter, Ferrer, Lattery and Brown look to be atleast as good as last year. All that and Mundt still hasn't taken a turn on the mound yet. If we can get to the post season in half decent position the pitching looks very serviceable for a long run.

What team are you watching, we've now lost 5 of 6, and furd is blowing us out of the park!. We're now sitting at or near the BOTTOM of the PAC12, how does that translate to GOOD?? The jury is out but this team has MILES to go to be a contender right now.
