right now Mitch is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic . unless some individual performances (mentally and physically) change quickly it's futile. I watch fall ball, went to Arizona and has seen all the home games and I thought our best chance was to be a small ball team. cut down on the swings, be more aggressive to fastballs and put the ball in play. instead we have 5 feet tall guys swinging out of their ass and standing at the plate waiting for the one pitch they could hit out of the park while the pitchers are carving them up. the early season homers were fool's gold. I'm old so I guess in the new analytical world its ok because they have they have great bat speed when they do decide to swing and strike out. what's scary to me is a thought it would be the pitching that would let us down and I still believe we are short of front line pitching. just observing from the outside it looks like their is a lack of leadership on the field. that is something you can't fake and maybe we just don't have any leaders on the team. in the past we've had teams that didn't need a 45 minute postgame talk from the coach, there were players who would take care of it themselves. not trying to be overly critical, but I expect the bar should be a top 30 team in the nation and a regional trip.

Too small of a sample for bad games at this point to know. It doesn't look good but what the stats show atm is...
1) We eat bad pitching alive. Anyone who can't locate we absolutely crush. That is what we should do against good pitching though. That said we have also lost to the Sunday Calpoly guy who has a 1.8 WHIP so...?
2) We struggle stringing runs together against good pitching and it mostly looks like youth is the issue. of the returners only Forrester, Bazanna and Dernedde were regular starters last year and have a full season of P12 under their belt. Even Smith was playing about 1/3rd of the season. Forrester and Baz are mostly on schedule for this season at this point but you can't score many runs if you can't string 2 hits together. We have huge piles of LOB and guys who can't get home in scoring position this year and that comes down to guys not getting hits when they need it.

I think you are correct, team leadership isn't as strong as it has been in the past. That said, the would be leaders are setting the example by swinging for the fence.

Looks like the same problem we had in Surprise (yes we won 3 of 4) but the problem was taking way way too many strikes. Not being aggressive in the ABs. Look at the number of "Ks" in the games we lost! and to compound things the bats never leave our hitters shoulders. In Surprise once we started to be aggressive at the plate we hit and scored. As my old coach use to say "if you don't hit you don't play"!

As I always heard was you better damn well hit the ball with runners on and I don't care how you do it. Use a Pool Cue, Tree Stump or Racket. Taking a 3rd Strike with runners in scoring position was worse than a Sin. He actually screamed at it once everyone was going to get the bunt sign if we didn't hit the ball with runners on. LOL I love Baseball!

When people ask about hits, they don’t ask how they ask how many

Hard to string together hits when the team is striking 26% of ABs. Bottom 3 in the order is just a dead spot like last season. Hope they can shake it.

"Lack of leadership on the field"...I've been around competitive athletics a long time. It's easy to throw that one around. The truth is neither you or I have any idea if there is a leadership issue. Leadership is best evaluated by the work habits of the teams most talented players and the encouragement they give to the less talented players on the roster. I've seen no evidence or report that these kids do not work hard, or that there is any kind of serious rift between players. The off the charts leadership guy in the program was Madrigal, most visible when he would approach the mound and give words of encouragement to a pitcher. The tone he helped set in practice and in the locker room was much more important. My sense is that there are players on this roster doing the same. We went through some rough spots in 2019. Those rough spots had nothing to do with the leadership skills of Adley. I'm not prepared to challenge anyone's leadership skills because of a 3 game skid.
