Clearing up a misconception... RE: Turley praise. The copy and pasted reports from so-called experts, many of which base their writeups with little or no personal observations. Or those at select events. However those were not the ONLY posts concerning Turley and the hype involved. Many may have been based on those C&P reports, but their were plenty of other posts hyping this young man far before he saw Pac11 pitching. Their are many posters on this board that state their own opinions besides those that C&P. Nothing wrong with hype, nothing wrong with "over" hyping a player and being excited about their potential. But, it is still hype. The kid made it onto the team of the school that was his first choice and is placed into the starting lineup immediately. As a freshman. On a team that consistently competes at the highest level. No, he isn’t overhyped. He is working things out. Wait and watch. That’s the best part of this process. We get to see him come out on the other side. No one said his current performance is permanent. Nor did anyone mention anything about the rest of what you mentioned Overhyped has do with what people thought/said far too early in his career. You can go back and read some comments, a entire thread, if you care to. Overhyped is on those premature comments, not on the player or his future.

Vance Honeycutt for UNC (one of the best Freshman last year) struck out 90 times in 247 AB last year....this year, 17 in 77 (pace of 54).
Gavin is currently higher pace than Honeycutt, but not by a ton. Just one example abut I'm confident Gavin will be just fine, just needs time to figure it out and work through it.

Let's not forget that Turleys slump has lasted less than a week.

It looks like they are trying to "tweak" his swing. It looks like they have tried to get him to slow down the swing and right now he is having a heck of time making contact on any pitch. I would wonder where his eyes are going.

Overhype implies dissatisfaction or a lack of performance. Otherwise, it’s just hype. If Turley had continued hitting HRs, no one would be saying he was overhyped. No one said it in the threads you mention.

I would wonder where his eyes are going. Mechanics look different than highschool too. Looks to me like they are teaching him how to keep the bat in the zone longer so he can deal with off speed and breaking balls a bit better. That allows you to make contact more often when you misjudge a pitch, pretty essential for a good hitter at this level when you can't just annihilate fast balls all day. Should help him foul the ball off and get more competitive AB.

Well, I'm not going to argue with your "personal" definitions... but hype and over hype are the same animal, one is just more in excess, and in the true definition isn't about a satisfaction level. It is the, in this case a bit too early, zealous promotion or discussion making something/one bigger/better than it/they really are at this point. Not the player's fault fans go a bit overboard. On the other hand, maybe you think "overrated" and overhyped are the same thing? Overrated would essentially be what you were arguing against in the initial response. Overrated is a direct assault on Gavin's talent level, and that his current slump is an indicator of that and his future. That is not what "overhyped" means. As far as "dissatisfaction", I'd guess that as a fan not many are happy where Gavin sits right now, but they do not see it as a permanent state.

If you're saying that overhype and hype are the same thing, then perhaps you should stick with hype to avoid ambiguity. Terrible use of quotes ("personal" definition), by the way. The are utterly meaningless. LOL

Lol "but hype and over hype are the same animal, one is just more in excess" Again, your original reply was off base and you continue to try and justify a "meaningless" (and grossly incorrect) take. But, you do you on this board!
