At least he is in good company with some real "name" coaches at high profile programs..... Five most overpaid men's college basketball coaches: Looking at you, Calipari and Hoiberg www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2023/03/08/most-overpaid-mens-college-basketball-coaches/11375973002/The article justifies it's selections mostly based on salary, records and tournament appearances, and does not take into account what we debate here around the more nuanced situation that Tinkle articulates, which depending on what side of the bed I wake up on either makes a lot of sense, or makes me think of Jake Blues ("I ran out of gas! I got a flat tire! I didn’t have change for cab fare! I lost my tux at the cleaners! I locked my keys in the car! An old friend came in from out of town! Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! IT WASN’T MY FAULT, I SWEAR...") Go Beavers! Make a tournament run (or two)!!

Hoiberg took over a disaster at Nebraska and has returned them to competitiveness.
Nothing is as worthless as a USA Today list.

Tinkle could easily drop off that list with a good showing next season (or a crazy “miraculous“ postseason starting tonight). For now he does qualify as overpaid, but he’s still not getting the kind of money some are.

Perhaps some of the categories are of the garbage in, garbage out variety, but they have about 10-11 categories they use to rank colleges.

U.S. News & World Report competes with USA Today annually as creators of the most meaningless lists. At least the UNNWT uses a pretty extensive set of criteria for its college rankings. Perhaps some of the categories are of the garbage in, garbage out variety, but they have about 10-11 categories they use to rank colleges. Two of the largest factors are how many people donate back to their university and survey results about how much the people like their university. Both of those are extensively gamed. Another thing that is gamed and is a third huge factor is acceptance rate. If you work hard to get people to apply, who are in no way serious about applying, like offering free applications, you can get your acceptance rate to go down, which also boosts your rankings. Small, private schools are able to do this and dramatically skew results. You can talk up the other "extensive set of criteria," if you actually know what those criteria are. But U.S. News & World Report lists are a complete and utter joke.

Perhaps some of the categories are of the garbage in, garbage out variety, but they have about 10-11 categories they use to rank colleges. UNNWT? Haste makes waste. OTOH, my alma mater ranks pretty high on the USNWR lists. So I think they are totally accurate! And yes, the universal application process has enabled some schools to game the system somewhat, as kids who know they probably won't be admitted to some elite private school can easily apply, with minimal cost, and with minimal tweaking to your application essay. Of course they're rejected but the school looks more selective. In my day, when you had to write essays in longhand, no way was I applying to a school I had little or no interest in, or little to no chance of acceptance. That's why I also applied to several safety schools who had a rolling admissions policy and no essay requirement. You learned in a couple weeks if you'd been accepted, and thus had a fallback if all else failed.
