Last night was Mitch's 150th game as head coach. He's 98-52 (0.656) and poised to have his 100th win with a sweep of Calpoly.
Frankly he's done better than my expectations and I'm not seeing good reasons that he will fall off now that Casey/Bailey players are mostly moved on. Players have developed, like the program and it's still our most reliable sport for catching a home win.

How are you feeling about the hire?

I like the hire. Players consistently talk about the family atmosphere Players consistently improve Former players hang around. Recruiting is good and we are consistently competitive.

This is the real gut check year too. Do we reload it rebuild? Was he just riding Casey's players and culture? Don't know the answer to #1 yet but I'm confident he's adding walls to the foundation Casey built not sitting on it repairing damage.

I sure hope he can grasp the nuances of college baseball.

Casey was 95-52-3 in his first 150 games. If you ignore the ties, Casey was an identical 98-52 in his first 150 decisions. Riley was 83-65-2 in his first 150 games Tanselli was 85-63-2 in his first 150 games.

I was lobbying for Canham among my Beaver lunch group as soon as Casey announced his retirement. The world is full of good coaches and teachers, but very few have 'it', and Canham clearly always did.
In hindsight, I think Covid helped Mitch's transition a ton. That 2020 season was looking to be a lost year.
As frustrating as it was to not play, it gave everybody more time to acclimate and adjust, and they all came out the next season with something to prove. And it's been all growth since, with no looking back.
Pat Casey was a once in a generation coach, maybe once in a century. I was convinced that whoever replaced him would take at least 5 years to make a super, if ever. Mitch did it in 3, and has filled what was supposed to be a rebuilding roster with some promising talent this year. While I don't think we'll come close to matching that gauntlet that our 1-5 hitters presented last year, we've got a much more balanced lineup through all 9 spots, with some extra bats to spare, looks like.
I wouldn't put another super regional out of this team's grasp, and runs to Omaha look very possible the next 2 years after that.
Recruiting some high draft pitchers and convincing them to stay on campus is my biggest wish going forward. Feels like we have a little less star power there this year...

jim - 2023 class has the pitchers if we can get any of them to come to campus. I think it gets more impressive in the 24 and 25 class.

How do I feel about the hire? It was the hire we had to make. Still feel that way. Young, energetic, home grown talent who had a complete different background in player development. I suspected he could really recruit if they could hold the program together as the current brand at the time. The story on Gavin Turley last week says a lot about Mitch. The constant thing about 2021 and 2022 is the staff got all they could with the talent they had in my view, especially post season. Good enough for potential recruits to think they can help get this team to Omaha.
I think the real question is, will we be able to keep him around for half as long as the last guy when bigger schools call and want to triple his compensation?

I think the real question is, will we be able to keep him around for half as long as the last guy when bigger schools call and want to triple his compensation? I doubt other schools are what we need to worry about. If the MLB wants him back there isnt much we can do. That said how style, that we have seen, is better for developing young players than dealing with egos on a roster in the show. College baseball coaching just isn't as lucrative as the numbers you see in football and basketball. Highest compensations are in the 1.5 million range with the majority under 500k. Mitch is making 525k this season and it scales up to about 750k by 2029. His package has about 150k of bonuses in it. It's pretty obvious the program is focused on increasing revenue with facility upgrades at this point. If Mitch gets to the CWS expect a renegotiation. If that doesn't happen it means Mitch is happy with his contract and vocation and untempted by other offers. For reference when he retired Casey was making 900k

I don't follow baseball as much as most of you...but am I wrong that Canham changes his line up around much more than Casey?
Not a criticism just something I noticed

We didn't see much lineup change last year really. He is definitely more of an MLB mindset where he platoons L/R matchups against starting pitchers and isn't afraid to give guys a chance to see what they can do. These early games are all about experimenting and giving guys a chance to shine. So the answer is mostly yes but its all within reason.

Not a criticism just something I noticed I think this is the most holes we've had to fill in our roster since he's been here. What we're seeing in non-conference is the natural byproduct of that. I think what we've seen in the first 1-2 games of series is what our lineup will be, and is probably pretty much set with about 11-12 guys, with a couple spots platooning based on L/R-hand pitching. Casey did his fair share of platooning players, as well. Once we get a win or two, game 3/4 is where he's giving other guys a shot, which I think is prudent against the lower quality competition we've faced, especially given all the talent potential we've stacked up.

Analytics has changed a managerial approach to the game. Everything is quantified and strengths and weaknesses are clearly identified. MC and RD will protect the weaknesses and play to the strengths. Good data and good instincts guide the lineup choices.
You won't see many OSU players in the transfer portal. The coaches are honest with their players, have a plan for their development, and everybody is made to feel like they are an important part of the team.
Mitch plays his kids!
