A player from Detroit mercy came with in 3 points of Maravich’s NCAA career scoring record. It only took him 5 years and 136 games to almost do what Pete did in 3 years and 83 games. Stat geeks have gone back and charted every Maravich’s shot to see how the three point line would have effected his average. Turns out he would have averaged 51 points per game. LEGEND

LEGEND Pete also averaged 38 shots per game. The Detroit Mercy player averaged 20. Pete was amazing, but he was a 1 man show that was allowed to be a ball hog and jack up as many shots as he wanted. 51 pts per game on 38 shots is not very efficient. If, he would have had the 3 pt line

Stat geeks have gone back and charted every Maravich’s shot to see how the three point line would have effected his average. Turns out he would have averaged 51 points per game. LEGEND Did they subtract the one-shot free throws he made on the first six common fouls of each half before the current bonus rule came into effect in 1973 or 1974? Maravich took 3,166 shots and had 1,152 free-throw attempts. Davis took 2,987 shots and 715 free throws. Yes, Davis had the 3-pointer, and he made 588 of them. Maravich also played in an era when players shot one free throw for a common foul before the bonus went into effect, in each half. So he got some FT attempts that Davis didn't. Davis was also a better FT shooter (.892 v .775), so he gained some points there as well. Pete was great, one of my all-time favorites. Antoine Davis is a great player too. Both great scorers in different generations and it's impossible to compare them.
