A lot of discussion about the fouls; I really didn't see it play out differently than normal. To me, Colorado is just a lot smarter in how they play and use fouls. Specifically:
- The foul total were pretty similar - 18(OSU) vs. 15 (CU). However, they shot 24 FTs to our 4. That means they committed fouls in a way that a) evenly distributed them so they didn't get into the bonus much, and b) committed fouls before we were in a position to shoot.
- A lot of our foul calls on us were no-brainers We were out of position, and fouled to stop the offensive player from scoring. Some of this was their superior quickness, some of it was poor defense on our part. For CU's part, the were rarely out of position, and were very aggressive when in good position. Refs will tolerate a lot more contact in that situation; once the offensive player has gotten the defense where they have the defender disadvantaged, that's when the whistle tends to be blown. When there's no clear advantage by either player, it's seen as just normal jockeying. Post players would never be able to battle for spots if that wasn't the case. Yes, there were some steals where hands/wrists were slapped, sometimes CU was called for these, other times they let it go - these are difficult calls to see, and CU smartly pushes the envelope - it's been their whole MO; they win games by stabbing a winning margin via the 'points off TO' category.
- Raegan doesn't do herself favors in that she doesn't sell fouls. That is, when a defender is doing something that's a foul, she needs to draw attention to it, emphasis that it's putting her at a disadvantage. Every time Regan makes contact as a defender, their guards would sell it as hard contact. That's just part of the game. Raegan rarely looks like she's being fouled by her demeanor and any change in motion - some of that is because of how strong she is, fouls on her don't move her like it does others. So that's where she needs to help herself out and sell that contact as impacting her. Pili is really smart about this - she'll often intentionally initiates contact when looking to shoot if defender is out of position, as that forces the ref to make the call. Whenever that happens, refs will aways call the defender for the foul (excepting extending an elbow), because the defender is out of position. On the flip side, I'm actually surprised Raegan doesn't get called for hooking on her spin moves - she does it very often. To her credit, they don't call it, so she keeps doing it.
IMO, this is just another area where we need to grow collective team's IQ. Being quicker would help, being smarter would help more.
