Great recap from fan club, Takedown Team on the action:
A rejuvenated Oregon State wrestling team finished their dual season by cutting down the Trees of Stanford 30-3 at home on Sunday. The Beavers won 9 out of 10 matches to dominate Stanford. Prior to the match, the team honored the seniors and their families on the mat.
The dual started at 125, where #26 Nico Provo of Stanford faced #12 Brandon Kaylor for the Beavers. Kaylor was the aggressor in the 1st round and forced a stall call on Provo, but the round would end scoreless. Kaylor escaped quickly to start the second period. Kaylor would add a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Provo would escape and take down to start the 3rd period. Provo would close within 3-2 in the 3rd, but was never a threat to score as Kaylor took a 3-2 decision.
133 lbs featured Jackson DiSario of Stanford facing #19 Jason Shaner for the Beavers. Shaner and DiSario traded deep shots with no scoring until Shaner was able to finish giving him a 2-1 lead heading to the 2nd round. DiSario would escape quickly to tie the score at 2-2. A deep shot by Shaner ended in a stalemate and the score remained tied at 2-2 going to the 3rd round. DiSario rode Shaner tough on top, but Shaner would get the reversal and ride out the rest of the round to score a 4-2 win and give the Beavers a 6-0 lead. The Beavers recognized honorary teammates between matches. A great way to recognize kids programs in Oregon!
At 141 Jason Miranda of the Trees took on the Beavs #33 ranked Cleveland Belton . Belton would waste no time scoring a takedown 15 seconds in to take a 2-0 lead. Miranda would return the favor with a takedown of his own and take a 3-2 lead into the 2nd period. Belton would score a reversal and near fall that would be challenged by the Stanford coaches. The near fall points would be taken off the board after a successful challenge. Miranda would escape tying the score at 4-4 heading to the 3rd round. Miranda would take a 5-4 lead with an escape, but Belton would score a go behind to take a 6-5 lead. Belton would secure riding time and take a 7-5 win giving the Beavers a 9-0 team lead.
OSU senior Riley Gurr took the mat for the Beavers at 149 to face Luciano Arroyo from Stanford. Gurr would score first off a single leg that ended up in a scramble. Gurr would ride out the period and head to the 2nd period with a 2-0 lead. Gurr would escape quickly then add to the lead with a another takedown to take a 5-0 lead. Gurr's tough ride on top would get a stall call against Arroyo and Gurr would take a commanding lead with riding time into the 3rd period. In an act of compassion, Gurr let Arroyo up and quickly took him back down again to add to his lead 7-1. Gurr would let Arroyo go again and take him down again to cement the major decision victory 10-2.
Isaiah Crosby would take the mat at 157 to face #11 Daniel Cardenas of Stanford. Crosby would bring the Miami heat early with a low level single giving him a quick 2-1 lead after the escape. Crosby would come out again with another quick takedown to make it 4-1, but Cardenas would escape and add a takedown of his own tying the score 4-4. Crosby would fight his way out to take a 5-4 lead, however a takedown and near fall would give Cardenas an 8-5 lead at the end of the 1st period. Cardenas would escape and add a takedown off Crosby's shot in the 2nd, but Crosby would escape to close to 11-7 going into the final period. The 3rd period would be back and forth scoring with Crosby getting a reversal, Cardenas answering with an escape, takedown, near fall, but Crosby escaping, scoring his own takedown and nearly getting near fall. In a match with tons of scoring, Cardenas would eventually win a back and forth match 17-13. The Beavers would go into intermission with a 13-3 team lead.
165 featured a big matchup as #18 Matthew Olguin of the Beavers faced 2021 national champ and #3 ranked Shane Griffith for the Trees. The first round would end in a defensive struggle tied 0-0. Griffith would escape to start the 2nd and take a 1-0 lead. After hand fighting for position and a series of half shots, the match would go to the 3rd with a 1-0 lead for Griffith. Olguin looked to have a reversal but it resulted in a no-call, which would be challenged by Pendleton. After a review the call would stand with Griffith remaining on top. Olguin would scramble again but Griffith would again hold on to the ankle to secure riding time before Olguin could escape. With seconds remaining, Olguin would hit a double at the buzzer to knock off the 2021 national champ and #3 ranked Shane Griffith!!!
174 featured two top 25 wrestlers in #25 Tyler Eichens of Stanford and #21 Mateo Olmos of the Beavers. Despite a lot of action in the 1st period, it would end in a 0-0 tie heading into the 2nd period. A quick escape gave Eichens the lead in the 2nd and that would be the end of the scoring heading to the 3rd period. Olmos would appear to have an escape but the refs seems to think differently. Olmos would score a reversal on teh re-start and an Eichens escape would tie the score at 2-2. Olmos would get in on a single but could not convert and the match would go to overtime. Eichens seemed to be waiting for an Olmos shot to counter, but it would not work as Olmos would saw the Tree down in OT with a takedown and a 4-2 win. The Olmos win would give the Beavers a 19-3 team lead in the dual.
At 184 Trey Munoz would put on a takedown clinic against Oregon native Brook Byers of Stanford. Byers would get the first takedown but after that it was all Munoz. Munoz would rack up a 10-4 lead in the first that included two stall calls against Byers. Munoz would add five more takedowns in the second period to take a 21-12 lead going ot the 3rd period. Munoz would tack on another takedown and riding time to finish with a 24-13 major decision giving the Beavers a 23-3 lead.
In a battle of the top two 197 lbers in the Pac-12, the Trees would send out #31 Nick Stemmet to face #17 Tanner Harvey of the Beavers. Harvey would come out quick with a fireman's carry and nearly score near fall to take a 2-0 lead. Stemmet would escape but Harvey would score another takedown along with a 4-point near fall to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Harvey wasn't finished yet as he would tack on another 4-point near fall to take a 12-1 lead at the end of the 1st period. Harvey would escape, and Eichens would score a takedown of his own to narrow the score to 13-3. In the 3rd Stemmet would score an escape and another takedown to make it 13-6. Harvey would escape and add another takedown of his own as well as riding time to earn a 17-6 major decision.
In the final match of the day Peter Ming of Stanford faced JJ Dixon of the Beavers. The first period had a lot of movement and action but no scoring. Dixon would take down to start the 2nd period and score a reversal along with a 2-point near fall to take a 4-0 lead. Ming would nearly reverse Dixon but JJ would hold to the leg as time ran out. Ming would start down in the 3rd period and score a reversal to close the score to 4-2. Dixon would escape toward the end of the period to close out a 5-2 decision and give the Beavers a big 30-3 win over Stanford heading into the Pac-12 tournament next weekend.
The Beavers will be back in action next weekend at the Pac-12 tournament.
