Can we quit commenting that the 47 point output was some kind of aberration. If you will agree that 2/19 from beyond the arc is an aberration, sure. The ball didn't fall in a once-a-season kind of way. I am not going to quit commenting, until you start talking about metrics and stats.

Sure are a lot of top defensive teams in the Pac12.,..when they play us. Washington plays that zone. If you can hit shots from the outside, you can pull them out of that zone. And they don't really have a counterpunch on offense. If you cannot hit shots from the outside, though, you tend to lose. 2/19. That's Oregon State's worst shooting performance from beyond the arc since the game in Tempe last year. You are not going to win many games shooting that poorly from the outside. And that is doubly true for a team, which plays that rigid zone defense. Those two games are the worst shooting games since Oregon State went 0/10 from beyond the arc in the two-point win over California in 2021. The Beavers would hit at least 30% of their shots from beyond the arc in nine of the next 10 games (the loss to Oregon being the exception) en route to the Elite Eight. Oregon State even hit 37.5% in the Elite Eight game against Houston but gave up 18 offensive rebounds (Houston came up with 43% of their missed shots! Unreal!), which doomed the effort. Washington’s (Syracuse) zone requires you to get the ball into the high post and either hit that shot or kick it out to 3 pt shooters. They extend the zone so you if you just pass the ball around the perimeter, you are going to be taking really deep 3’s. You got to get the ball into the high post at the free throw line first to make the zone collapse.

Everybody saw the givemes that were missed last night. Tyler, DiMa and Rataj each had multiple 7 and 8 foot shots that rolled around and out. That's how you attack that zone. Add to it the horrible 3 pt shooting. The offensive game plan was there, the shots were missed. On the flip side, the Huskies aren't very good. Their head coach be fired at season's end.

Ironic huskies beat us and their coach is likely canned. With blinders on to all the external factors, sure.

Ironic huskies beat us and their coach is likely canned. It's funny how some like to ignore the talent advantage UW has over OSU. Brooks was a 5 star from Kentucky, they have a bunch of 4 star kids. Bajema was a 4 star from Michigan. It destroys the narrative so, I understand why people don't like talking about it. It's pretty much that way with every Pac12 school OSU plays.

Ironic huskies beat us and their coach is likely canned. I don't know about likely. Washington had a five-win season two seasons ago and does not have an Elite Eight appearance to counter-balance it. Oregon State has two seasons better than any Washington season over the past four seasons. The lows have not been as pronounced, but there are not really any highs to speak of. Honestly, Hopkins should get another year, as long as he wins more games than he loses to finish the year. If not, I could see this being his last year. Hopkins can coach, but he can't recruit to Seattle, which is a far easier place to recruit to than Corvallis. He should probably head back east and try and get a gig back there.

You got to get the ball into the high post at the free throw line first to make the zone collapse. Don McLean was talking about how you HAVE to get the ball inside in order for a perimeter offense to work. Seems so obvious and yet.... The Syracuse 2-3 is college basketball's version of the Italian Catenaccio system in soccer. Syracuse won a National Championship, went to five Final Fours, and won 15 Big East Championships with that zone. It can be beat, but you have to hit your threes. That did not happen last night. Oregon State beat Washington with a healthy Chol starting and with four days of rest between a game in Portland and one in Corvallis. No Chol this time around and two days to prepare around a trip between Pullman and Seattle. KC is a defensive beast, but he needs a ton of work on offense. Andela and Bilodeau are much better offensively, but you lose a ton on defense playing either. The best way to beat the zone is to get the ball to the paint and have someone bite, so that you can set up a pass, which will hopefully set up a shot or a next pass and shot. But the 2-3 zone is designed to thwart that initial entry pass into the paint, so it is all easier said than done. They say that the only way to beat a well-run 2-3 zone is to run the 2-3 well yourself. Tinkle can pull off a decent 2-3 zone in stretches, but we have so many freshmen that it is very difficult to really have everyone ready to go without much prep. If the Washington game was first, I would have felt a lot better at our chances. Playing the game second did not leave much time to prepare, especially when Washington got the extra day. Anyway, those are my random musings about Washington. When the defense is working, it can be very difficult to crack, and missing from outside compounds the problems of facing the defense. You have to be prepared off the miss to face the fast break that the miss will cause.

Ironic huskies beat us and their coach is likely canned. Well we did split with them on the season. Somehow we haven't win in Seattle in 20 years, which is flat out disgusting.

Ironic huskies beat us and their coach is likely canned. Well we did split with them on the season. Somehow we haven't win in Seattle in 20 years, which is flat out disgusting. 2003! My Senior year at Oregon State. Since then, the closest losses: 2004 80-79 2006 69-65 2018 79-77 2019 81-76 OT
The last one was tough. Tres Tinkle missed what would have been a go-ahead free throw with 53 seconds left. Washington's Matisse Thybulle and Stevie Thompson, Jr., each missed threes, which pushed it to overtime. David Crisp's three with 49 seconds left put Washington up five. The Huskies made their free throws to trade points from there for the win. Had Oregon State won that game, the Beavers would have finished third in the Pac-12 and had a great chance to get a Tourney invite. Instead, Colorado beat Oregon State by 15 in the Pac-12 Tournament, and the Beavers were jobbed out of an NIT invite.
