You only play Guerra or Macias against UC Santa Barbara, if Dernedde's not the guy. I have to believe that Canham did enough work in the offseason to come to the conclusion that Dernedde's the guy. If we are playing someone else at short in game three, this has the makings of an absolutely awful season. Sunday game is NM again. Good game to play around with lineups and develop young guys. After New Mexico won 7-2 on Friday?

Yup, they have used their best pitchers already and we already played a bunch of new guys. I'd like to see how Guerra, Macias and Kennel fair. Krieg and Wheeler are also guys I wouldn't mind getting more looks. Frankly these games barely matter except for momentum.

I wish this was true, but unfortunately it's not...any loss that is a sub100 RPI team at the end of the year is a killer for hosting and potentially even getting into tourney

We also have no idea where NM lands at this point. They are loaded with Junior and Senior players. Were basing their finish off of last year which could be completely wrong. If they do well in conference and have a win over us then they probably aren't sub 100. It's better for long term success to take some risks and learn what players are ready for the real deal so you are ready for conference play. Don't look now but NM is up 3-1 top of the 9th on UCSB.

New Mexico now 2-0 after a solid win.
I hear you nuclear, it's all circular...but the games barely mattering is wrong with RPI....I wish the first two weeks were thrown out or 1 or 2 worst losses or something...would allow coaches to let guys get some time in situations...that's something Aaron Fitt has been pushing for

It would be cool to have a 'pre season' so coaches are more free to experiment and give guys opportunity. In any sport there is a difference between game and practice performance and sometimes everyone gets surprised. NM is the team to beat this weekend and it kinda makes sense, their lineup is completely seniors and juniors who you would expect to be ready to ball early season. At the end of the day our goal should be hosting every season and that means 42+ wins most years. To make that kind of mark you need to have your best lineup ready to go every weekend. Only way you know that line up is if you have lots of experienced returners or try lots of players in game and hope to find the mojo. Hosting every year is a great fan goal but it's not that realistic. For an elite program making the regionals every year is a realistic goal which is 35ish wins. We all know that you can catch fire in the post season and go all the way. I'm expecting the lineup to be pretty wild for the first 12 games and be pretty locked in for WSU. Hopefully we get Ben back before WSU cause he is going to be the rock of the pitching staff this year.

Last year, New Mexico was a quad four team. Oregon State went 5-0 against quad four teams, including the pair against New Mexico, and were top eight. Unless New Mexico is more than 40 spots better in RPI this year, if Oregon State loses to New Mexico, you are looking at two quad four losses in the first three games. That is a deep hole to crawl out of to start the year. Throw in like a couple of midweek losses and a loss to Utah, and the RPI can get really bad really fast. RPI punishes you for bad losses much more than it rewards you for good wins. Garbage metric, but it is what it is.

Isn't that like 3 quality wins sometimes?

Today was a truly great day. Weather much warmer. Tailgated before and after the game with the brother/SIL/wife of the Minnesota head coach, some former players from their 2018 season and other Gophers in the area. Met the head coach of the St. John's University football team, they are the Linfield of the Midwest, we discovered his wife taught several of my nieces back in St. Cloud. Just super people.
The players/families had fond memories of the 2018 regional and much respect our program and what we have accomplished. Their head coach is a lot like Casey, highly principled, built a program mostly on his own, and a builder of men.
And the coach's BIL told me Paul Molitor is absolutely a super person who will do anything for the Gophers. He's one of my all-time favorite MLB players.

Minnesota is definitely doing some things right. Looks like a good program. Kudos to them!
